Yes agreed. Way out of hand JVR is a good player but nothing spectacular.

He's exactly what the leafs need to play on the wing with Matthews..

Eichel was also old for his draft year..
- ClarksonDavid

Yes Couturier as well. I think he dropped farther than anyone expected and is a pretty solid player. I believe you really have to be aware of the really young guys in the draft because they are sometimes a year late in getting to junior.

I don't know if Matthews should be discounted a small amount because of his age. We won't know until he plays some games in the NHL. I just don't think everyone should ignore the age factor as a key evaluation consideration. Cory Pronman dropped Matthews below Laine in his evaluation. He might be wrong. But, it is worthy of debate only a month before draft day.

I'd be very disappointed if leafs took a winger of Mathews. Very.

You're a leaf fan, what is your reaction to seeing Perron on e same level as marner. How do you feel about seeing him outdo marner?

- burn

It's amazing how he can manage to do it without even scoring more points, just through the sheer, awesome power of intangibles.

He'll take a Rielly/Kadri type contract.. probably not what he'd get on the open market, but has an opportunity to play on a very skilled future Leafs team.

I dont think Sens fans should ignore Phaneufs contract, age, decline play and poor leadership. Yet here you are.

It's pretty disheartening to watch. When I was growing up they were the best hockey team ever! Now it's like beating my head against the wall watching them play. Even got rid of my season tickets cause I couldn't stand paying to watch this crap.
- Ihatebrianburke

For sure. I spent 7 years in Fort Mac/Edmonton and there's lots of quality fans out there who deserve better. I personally hope for many a Leafs vs Edmonton SCF in the future

The age 'ol leaf question. You have a good winger, but what can he do with a good centerman

It really has been a long time since they had a high end center. Having neither that or a #1 Dman can really drive you crazy

No one said better than McDavid. If that was said then prove it.

Better than Toews maybe yeah, i believe has has the potential to be better than Toews. Toews isnt exactly the best point producer.. so for that reason i think its completely possible. Hes also one of the most overrated players right now.

- Arctic_AARDVARK

I remember people throwing around trade proposals like Mathews ++ for Mcdavid and a lot said they wouldn't do it.
That kind of suggests that Mathews will be better than Mcdavid. I've smoked too much pot in my lifetime to remember all of them and theres no way I'm going to back read the last 5 blogs. I understand the excitement, he looks amazing at 18, nothing else to do at this time of year but dream of whats to come. I wish habs fans were as positive sometimes, we got idiots over in our thread wanting to trade Price, Subban etc, all because of one (frank)ed up season

I completely relate

But for example, If Edmonton offered McDavid for the 1st, Marner and Rielly id tell them to go (frank) themselves.

Daigle over Pronger. Good thing Pronger's age wasn't ignored by the sens.

I disagree. A loyal fanbase who sticks with the team in the bad times deserves more than a bunch of Johnny come lately Chicago fans fair-weather fans who only come out when the team is winning.

You could be right. But you need to take into account that nobody in Ottawa thought that the Sens could move contracts for Greening, Michalek and Cowen. Ottawa has a really strong core of great young Dmen and the reasoning goes that Phaneuf can be a real help to the young guys. Nobody seems overly concerned by his contract. If the Sens make the playoffs this year it will likely have something to do with the renewal of Phaneuf. It is going to be a lot different for him playing #4 rather than having to log #1 minutes. He seems in good shape. His skating looks solid. He might not be Larry Murphy but he will help.

Ya.. given what people expect Rielly/kadri to get and what they actually signed for not sure it's worth the time trying to figure out what it would take to sign JVR..

No, I wouldn't do those three either. If you were Pitt would you trade Crosby and Malkin for Mcdavid?
I think I would.

That would be huge for the league. Sadly it doesn't happen if Chiarelli doesn't find us a couple of defensemen.

Looking back, maybe kovalchuk vs. spezza would have been a similar scenario.

Up and until the point of kovy ditching the nhl, I’m not certain there was a wrong pick there.

Probably the same case here…though I’d be shocked if we pass on the center.
