I certainly wouldn't do it if I were Montreal. Nurse is still a project ... Yak is a suspect. So, its RNH and a 1st for him? Doesn't get it done.
- Oneonta Penguin

That's a dramatically simplified take on it. Simply because Nurse is a "project" doesn't make him any less of a VERY valuable piece. That having been said, I agree that it likely wouldn't get it done.

I love that Connor and nurse don't have to be protected in the proposed expansion rules I've heard

- HB77

Last thing I heard which was about a month ago was that they would have to be protected. I read that third year players would be included in the draft. And with Connor finishing his second year before the expansion draft he would be considered a third year player

It's not a crazy idea by any means. But you better make sure you sign someone of brouwers quality at minimum or youve truly gutted your right side.
And the thing about Edmonton is putting too many eggs in the basket of assuming anyone Will sign in edm probably isn't wise

- HB77

If Brouwer (or someone of that ilk) can be signed at 1201 July 1st that door wide. Don't have to make the deal/s to gut the right side until there is a solution in place. Remember that they can be over the cap by 10 percent for majority of the offseason if that becomes an issue short term.

Edmonton should also look outside the box.
Try to find a top 4 defender that is developing or is emerging; in other words, he is flying under the radar.
If we want to acquire Trouba, Barrie, Shattenkirk, or Vatenen, it will cost Edmonton a valuable asset.
Now if we try to acquire a player that doesn't have a lot of current value right now since no one knows who the hell he is, it would be really cheap for us.

Look at Parayko, no one knew who the hell he was 2 years ago, now he is probably STL next Top 2 defender. I bet two years ago, you could have gotten him for a 2nd rounder.

The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend. LOOK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, Edmonton still needs one of the guys listed (Preferably Trouba), but if they can find a player that I jsut described, they can get two great defender at a much cheaper price

- EdmHockeyMan

Madison Bowey, Damon Severson, Ryan Sproul, Radko Gudas, and Josh Manson are prime targets for such.

But as soon as you go over the salary cap every team knows you have to lose salary in a trade and therefore will probably try to take advantage of that in negotiations

Well you heard wrong If the expansion draft takes place next year in June, their contracts won't officially have moved into their 3rd years as July 1st is the date contracts expire.

You just ruined my great day I'm having

Golf at the cottage and some drinks with the gf's fam now :

I thought if u were still on your elc and only a first or second year pro? Which is exactly what they'd be at the time of announcement (this summer) or even by the actual draft (next summer)

No?

Well I think since the draft would be next June Connor would be done his second year of his contract and going into his third year of his contract that he would be considered a third year player. That was the conclusion that many writers came to. But like I said that was about a month ago and things could've changed since then

Yes my mistake. I knew nylamder was the example I just forgot he played in the AHL in the 2014-2015 season.

Draft would be held in June unless they did something that has never been done before. Meaning Darnell and Connor would still only be in their 2nd years as pro players. IF they chose to hold the draft in July then they would need to be protected. Nurse would just barely be protected as he played a handful (like 6 or 8) last season.

But anyone who was technically a rookie this year and any of next year's rookies are safe.

Ever heard of Alexei Marchenko? Drafted in the 7th round by the Red Wings in 2011.
He is playing good minutes on TEAM RUSSIA IN this year's WC.

He is a RSD, big, aggressive, two-way defender, that can play incredibly smart hockey. He is mostly known for his great defensive plays and he has an amazing outlet pass.

The reason no one knows who this guy is is because he is playing third pairing minutes for Detroit with Smith, who formed the best defensive pairing Detroit via advanced stats and by visual play.

Even most Detroit fans are undervaluing him. Some view him as a depth defender, but I have a good feeling he is going to be a steal for the Red Wings, unless Edmonton can acquire him. Hell even Jiri Fisher, one of the staff on Detroit's player devellpment board states that MArchenko's career has been "highly under the radar."

Edmonton needs a two way defender that can play solid defensively and can help out the offense with great transition across the neutral zone, something we struggle with A LOT. Getting Barrie, Vatenen, or even Shattenkirk woudl definitely help us with offesnive transition, but it still doesn't solve our problems in our defensive zone since most of them listed are offensive defenders (Vatenen isn't that great defensively, Barrie is alright defensively, and Shattenkirk is alright defensively, but the contract issue with him could be a kilelr for us). That is why Trouba, imo, is the best candidate if Edmnoton is going to get a guy that will cost us.

Edit: I might even do a blog about him.

Honestly I think Eller does ,ore for the oil than bealieu I live in Edmonton so I rarely get to see him play. But he's a LHD which the oil don't need. Is he really gonna help our D since we already have sekera klefbom nurse Davidson reinhart as LHD
- kessellover69

Bealieu would instantly be a top pairing in Edmonton regardless of which hand he shoots; if the oilers could land him for Yakupov then do it. Then go out and sign a guy like Demers or Polak, and you almost have something there....throwing in Sekara and Nurse and then letting the 3rd pairing grow and limit their ice time.

Yes, I have heard of Marchenko It comes down to cost. I can handle Demers at a decent cap hit with one or two of those under the radar (UtR) acquisitions. Run a D corps like:

Klefbom- Demers/Trouba
Sekera- Fayne
Davidson- (UtR)
Gryba

Then run Nurse, Reinhart, Oesterle, Simpson, and any other Dmen acquired in the AHL.

This is true for sure

But his potential and toolset are almost beyond debate

No doubt he struggled at times this year getting thrown to the wolves, but those skills and intangibles were still clear

He's got serious value imo

- HB77

Precisely. Worst case scenario development wise is that he woudl be a top 4 defender on any team. Best case scenario is that he becomes a top 2 defender that can play big minutes.

Klefbom-Trouba
Sekera-Marchenko/Demers
Davidson-Fayne/Gryba

WOULD BE A DEFINITE IMRPOVEMENT compared to what we had this year.

All other defenders you listed would be for depth for now. Nurse might be fully ready by two years. By then, we should actually be looking at trading Sekera to make room for Nurse. Reinhart and Davidson would be playing top 6 minutes by then. Oesterle, Simpson, and other D-men would be still in development.

I seriously think that Marchenko woudl be an amazing pickup for Edmonton. He, in my opinion, coudl be the next biggest steal for the Red Wings, like Parayko type of steal, yet everyone is undervaluing him.

He's not as good as klefbom. Nor as proven as sekera, who's a hella good 2nd pairing guy.

I really don't think he's the quality of guy they'd be looking for to truly shore up the defence. Not to say he's no good or doesn't have potential....

Plus with the emergence of Davidson who showed a ton his year, I think the oilers are looking brodin/trouba quality at least. And nurse..

He's never had more than 64 games played in a year and has 3 career goals in 150+ NHL games. His underlying numbers show he played as a 4/5 in MTL last year and played decent in that role. He's not a top pairing dman. Maybe he gets there maybe he doesn't. I see him as a good second pairing guy. If he shot right I would be all over that deal but the oilers need right shooting dmen. They shouldn't be wasting assets to get a LHD which they have plent of.

IF Anaheim is able to resign their dmen then they need to protect Manson, Vatanen, Fowler, Lindholm, and Depres as young guys. I target them hard.

maybe run

Hall-RNH-Drai
Pou-McD-Eberle
Maroon-Eller-Kassian

I would be okay with that....but then we're basically expecting PC to trade the 4th pick and either Nurse or Klefberm to get us a defender.

.44PPG vs .35PPG says otherwise. Not to mention gross misuse of Yakupov for a good portion of that time. By no means do I think Yak is a great, nor even good player, but his value is greater than that of Lars Eller. And yes even more than that of Lard Eller and a 3rd.

Are you actually saying you wouldn't move LD and our 4th for Keith or Doughty? I would poop/piss/ejaculate simultaneously if that trade went down.
