Brian Bickell scored some really big playoff goals too one year. Brouwer is a consistent 20g, 40pt player. He's depth. Nice depth, but not a highly sought after free agent. I didn't say "because he's not making $10M he's not highly sought after". He's a supporting role player. There are plenty of guys, Okposo included, who will be in much higher demand.
And yes, people would love Shaw I'm sure, but he's restricted as you saw. So we would be trading for him and would own him. Garth has a history of doing business with Bowman and they're in cap hell again. It's not out of the question to flip a guy like Quine and a mid-round pick for Shaw's rights. - eichiefs9
Perhaps its because im an islander fan, and I know what KO is really worth, but if given the choice, im taking Troy Brouwer over KO anyday.
Please explain your shaking of the head. - kindlyrick
Why is it a bad business model not to have a roster laden with players born in Ontario?
Yes, the OHL is likely the best of the 3 CHL leagues. But if you think that's a function of anything other than the fact that the GTA is the most densely populated part of Canada, then you are sadly mistaken. Simpy put: larger population = larger talent pool = more competition = greater chance of more NHL'ers coming out of Ontario. It's not like there's a magic potion in the Ontario drinking water that makes them better hockey players than someone from Saskatchewan.

Im not comparing the OHL to the WHL.......and to your point that its the largest densley populated area, yet the leafs didnt have a single player from said area is a problem. Ultimately you play juniors where you're from. So, if the leafs arent drafting players in their own backyard, and that league has some of the best talent in the show, then yeah its a problem.
Sidenote : to my point, the leafs have alleviated that situation with their assistant coach DJ Smith

Just so I'm clear...are you saying they need to draft more OHL players? Or more Ontario-born players?
Also...Nazem Kadri. Played in the OHL. Born in London, ONT.

Yes the ohl has a ton of great players but that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of other options out there. Hockey is international........I guess Nylander shouldn't have been drafted and they should avoid matthews too because he didn't play there. Mitch marner did so at least there's that.

Perhaps you dont understand........in juniors you play where you're from. So to your example. Kadri, played London Knights, which is in London Ontario....in the OHL, which is the Ontario Hockey league......capiche? So what im saying is the Leafs which is an Ontario team, didnt have a single player from the OHL (the Ontario Hockey League), which has produced such blow hards as Tavares, Stamkos, Doughty, Thornton etc etc etc.
Allow me to apologize as im busy at work and TOTALLY misinterprated what you said. Im an idiot. You were saying Kadri is from Ontario and played in the O. I get it.

You're coming in at the tail end and are missing my point.

Right, for CAN born players you play in the league where you're from. But for American/Euro born players, you're drafted in the import draft. So what I'm unsure of is if you mean that:
- you think the Leafs need to be drafting more players out of the OHL, regardless of where they were born?
OR
- you think the Leafs need to be drafting more Canadian, Ontario-born players..who happen to play in the OHL because that's where they grew up.

Im saying that the leafs have some of the best players coming into the NHL in their backyard and haven't been capitalizing on scouting or drafting them.

This might be true but I'll say this, F@#k Toronto I hope next year they still have no ohl player on their team and we have Stamkos. Bailey would be an exception for them

I think this Stamkos to Leafs has been lined up for a year now......to me, this was a pre arranged thing.

Well they selected one 4th overall last year...so that's not really true.
A couple of their best defensive prospects are from ONT. Kadri is.
It doesn't matter where a player is from.
Going off central scoutings rankings for North American players:

Sweden
Florida
Finland
Long Island
North Carolina
Russia
Illinois
Minnesota
Largely irrelevant here, but I'm just pointing out that birthplace should have zero weight in any decision ever. If you can play hockey, you can play hockey.
Also, it's interesting some of the places that kids are coming from these days. A lot of California kids. Now we're seeing guys from FL and NC. Hockey is spreading, that's for sure.

Maybe it seems like a sure thing but a lot of the so called experts think he's gonna stay in Tampa. He did move his parents there and he likes it there so who knows. I'd rather see him go anywhere but Toronto except for the rags but they don't have the cap space anyhow. A lot of guys don't like playing in Toronto because of all that comes with it look at Clarkson (not his fault they gave him a contract he couldn't live up to). Point is we don't know what he's thinking

I don't honestly think anyone believes the Islanders are legitimate contenders in this sweepstakes. But it's nice to dream and crazier things have happened.

Unless your the pre 90's Habs then you only have French Canadian players

They have that being said I wouldnt bet on him coming here
I really could care less about draft right now.
I think snow plan is to trade picks and assets to get someone that will be meaningful for us to win a championship.
