I think my favorite thing about Mike Sullivan is how he handles the duplicity of being a coach. There's no getting around the fact that he's a hard ass. He holds everyone accountable and isn't afraid to take disciplinary steps that may be considered a public shaming such as a benching if someone's not meeting his standards, even his stars. Yet, he's still able to breed a loose atmosphere where guys can just have fun and be themselves. I mean his reaction to people (frank)ing with Kessel's stall was great. Basically says he loves it and just having fun with it this late in the game and remembering that hockey is a game that's supposed to be enjoyed even this close to the cup is the most important thing. How many people can pull off both sides of the coin like that? You got guys like Tortarella and Therrien who'd probably blow a gasket if guys were (frank)ing around on game day of the ECF, and then guys like Dan Bylsma who probably let the lockeroom get too loose and never taught guys how to flip the switch between fun and work. Just really, really impressed with Mike Sullivan.

I truly wonder what has changed in Sullivan from his two years as HC in Boston and now. What did he learn that he brought forward?

I mean I was really young back then and not a sports fan in any substantial sense but how badly did Sullivan actually do? Looking at his records he seemed to do pretty well his first year and then had a bad year following a lock out. Can you really judge a guy off of one good year and one bad year especially if that bad year came after a lock out?

No, you can't really get a good judge of it. However, something happened that he fell out of disfavor with management. Maybe it was the new rules coming out of the lock out that changed for Boston? He wasn't bad there.

Well after Sully had his down year the B's GM got fired and Chierrela came in. Makes sense why Sullivan was fired. Chierrela wanted to clean house and bring in his guy. There's no reason to be loyal to a rookie head coach who just had a bad season.
