3 years/$18 mil maybe. Nielsen is essentially having two Couturiers in every sense. Dollar isn't the problem, but years are. I still think he stays an Isle though. Hell, they may even offer him more. But he is damn good.

6 per for a shootout specialist?!?!
- YuenglingJagr

We need shootout specialists. It's that simple. Especially now in this age of 3v3 overtime it is more important than ever!

Mon said 6x3, because at 32 years of age, you want to keep the term down so you go higher on AAV

6 is a little much for me to swallow, but I do think Nielsen has three years left with the way he skates and thinks the game, so yeah, I'd probably swallow hard and see what he'd say about 5x3, see what other pieces I could snag to play with him and maximize the dollars

- AllInForFlyers

I'd do 4 years at $5m for Nielsen, if Read or Streit can be moved for a pick. I don't think he's going to drop off a cliff the way a physical guy like Backes would.

So, have we given Giroux's 1C spot to Ryan (frank)ing White yet?

the minutes that the VDV/White/Belle line got was because the other bottom six line was even more of a mess for much of the year

get a top 6 winger this summer, move raffl down a spot, and maybe replace vdv with someone with some wheels/scoring/size and they'd be much better

still... until they have more D guys that can handle the puck at the blueline and create scoring chances they are going nowhere

- Marc D

I agree with the first statement, but what i think needs to happen is 12-28-93 get the band back together. we need 3 good scoring lines with depth...obviously things will move around during the season but if that line regains their magic and someone plays a competent role on a 3rd line with simmonds or schenn we are in a great position.

I think spreading talent across the top 9 is the most ideal situation (more than loading up the top 6)

It's high. Something like 5 would be way better. If he accepted a 4yr/5 deal? Don't love the 4th year but I'd rather the higher cap hit I think. Like I said, the Isles could offer him more flat out or he just wants to stay and accepts as much or less to be there. Been an Islander for 13 years. I'm trying to come up with more names bc I think he's a long shot. But a 3C (he's really a 2C) is something this team desperately needs.

That wouldn't be the worst deal in the world -- he's gonna give value on the contract

Backes can absolutely still score, and in his prime he was an elite possession driver too. He has had 2 years of underlying decline in a row though. And so it always goes: first the underlying #s then the scoring numbers. Vinny had 32 pt in 39 games before we signed him. The fact that Fronzi has shown no decline in his underlying stats makes me less worried.

so lets say 6 million is what hextall is willing to sign someone to...you think Nielson is the better play than Ladd, Backes, Loui? Or you just think theres an actual shot of him signing for 3 yeras

the best teams have 3 good lines and a 4th line that doesn't hurt you and can play D/cycle/grind

top 6 is becoming an anachronism

speaking of Nielsen,, Boomer Gordon on xm radio is a huge fan of his and he really loves and follows the Isles

My fear with Backes moreso than Ladd -- but I fear it with Ladd too -- is when their declines hit, it's sudden. It's brutal

I watch a lot of the Blues, and Backes is gonna be a VERY high risk buy. Someone's gonna do it, but it wouldn't be me

Ladd's got slightly less hard miles on him, but he's still worn down the tread to a degree where you could be looking at a $6 million RJ Umberger in three years

How about Colton Sceviour as an upgrade for the bottom 6?

https://www.capfriendly.c...m/players/colton-sceviour

He was used in a very defensive role by Dallas, got almost no PP time, and still put up 23 points in 71 games.

We already have overpriced wingers in Jake "I suck according to 2Real" Voracek and Wayne "Overvalued by the Fan base" Simmonds. We need more overpriced centers.

See my above about Backes. Ladd also dipped this year and he is a big physical guy too with some wear. Loui is strong, but he wants 5-6 years. Plus I read that Boston is still working hard to sign him. Ladd also supposedly wanted 6. Backes is looking for a Kesler deal if he leaves St Louis. I read he might take a discount to stay in terms of years.

I think this team needs a stop gap center way more than a LW. Jake and Schenn and Raffl and Konecny and NAK and Lindblom all can play LW. Our top 6 is already pretty locked down. We have no center prospects of note and none at the NHL level. It just screams out to me. And I don't want to Kitty Genovese it away, ok?!

the 29 yr old Russian center would be amazing or adding
Nielsen for 3 years

add a right handed top 4 D man and they'd be right there

I might rearrange the top 6, but yeah, I like it. That 3C changes everything. Maybe keep Read up and Leier is in the bottom idk. But the dynamic of the team is much different and better with an upgrade at 3C rather than LW, I think. That's a deep lineup.
