3 maybe 4 I would take over JVR - senstroll
JVR only has 2 more years left then he's UFA. that hurts his value when we're talking about a rebuilding team acquiring him. |

Though I know Laine is full of skills, i'm a little skeptical because he's on a stacked Finnish team that's probably going to win it all, as opposed to Matthews that's on a crappy bush team..
Both are awesome and both will succeed in the NHL.. but there's no way to tell which one will be better. In fact, we shouldn't really be comparing them right now. One's a flairing sniper and the other one is a 2-way that plays on all situations. Totally different skillset. - Delryk
Laine is a kessel. Matthews is a Tavares. |

Hot dog Phil does not deserve a cup. - cesareborgia
It pisses me off how the guy is just skating around slowly, not caring about anything, and scoring (that's all he does).
When will the Penguins coach realize this guy is hurting the team? |

I would be thrilled with that for Matthews. I think Laine will end up being a better all round player than Philip. |

Because the Leafs have won the lottery, they now have the appropriate assets to make that deal. |

True - but not all drafts are equal: This year we are looking at one of Tkachuk,Nylander, Dubois or Juolevi - all four look like pretty good prospects - likely good for a long time. JVR is a proven scorer with 2 years of control. Good contract but two more years! what would you rather have 2 years of JVR at 4.25 mil or Nylander at 800k for five or six?

When they get the lifetime supply of Sourkraut delivered in the offseason that goes against the cap next year.

the answer to that question is not the same for every team.
Nylander is still unknown, no guarantees he is a better player than JVR.
A team might think they are a playoff team and want a 25-30 goal scorer over a prospect. i dont get the idea Vancouver (Benning) thinks the Canucks are as bad off as they are.

I don't necessarily disagree with your post, but the bolded can't be true. He has to have some performance bonuses in that contract for the next 2 years then will be up for a new contract that one would have to think would be higher than 800k.
He burned a year off his ELC this year, right? Or am I wrong on that? |

The other drafts were thought of as good as well.
The guys coming in (like nylander) aren't going to make 800 for 5-6 years. They get elc for 3 years (and that's more than 800k+ bonus) and then afte r3 years they be most likely 5mil or more if they live put to expectation |

Its basically the same thing every Draft.. the 4,5,6 picks are treated like sure fire stars, cant miss..

I agree that dumb moves will be made. Especially by Vancouver and Edmonton. I think the fan base in Vancouver would blow a gasket if Benning made that deal. Wonder what the Vegas odds are of Edmonton picking first overall next year?

Based on what the Leafs "Currently" have to work with, I think the Defense Core for this upcoming season should look like this:
TOP 6
o Morgan Rielly - Left ('94)
o Jake Gardiner - Left ('90)
o Connor Carrick - Right ('94)
o Nikita Zaitsev - Right ('91)
o Matt Hunwick - Left ('85)
o Martin Marincin - Left ('93)
**7th D-Man**
Battle between the below 3 players...
o Scott Harrington - Left ('93)*would have to really impress during preseason**
o Stuart Percy - Left ('93) **I think the Leafs will look to trade him this Summer**
o Frank Corrado - Right ('93)**think the leafs will try to sneak him through waivers**
All potentially trade-able if they dont want to risk losing them via waivers.
Returning to AHL:
o Rinat Valiev - Left ('95)
o Viktor Loov - Left ('92)
Because the Leafs have the ability to be send both to the AHL....You use that option. Both Could be called up during the season--if playing well with the Marlies. - Sandro
Would be OK with trading Gardiner and losing Hunwick/Marincin

love how the centre and left winger from denmark think they are doing a good job blocking the lane to the empty corner. |
