Anyone see Patterson's article on how San Jose has stayed relevant since 2011 why the Canucks have fallen off a cliff? Basically the Sharks have the same core players in Thornton, Pavelski and Marleau but they drafted well and built depth, plus, Wilson totally remade their defence.

Essentially Nonis and Gillis really failed the franchise with their poor drafting and their inability to trade from a position of strength.

Derek Roy and similar rentals for picks are why we are where we are today.

Påhlsson (I think was for some late round picks, but still a rental)

To a degree yes, there's still a seven year gap in the draft with ZERO players on the team. That's a lot of dead space!

7 years in this league is a generational gap, it will take 7 more years to regain that ground. Or we could trade away all our young assets for quick fixes to relive some lost dream

Why can't they win? Been some up and down seasons last couple years. As long as they don't add a bunch more rookies and injuries take a toll again. I don't see why they can't return to a "contending" team!

Very poor drafting.

It's always easy to find the praise when the team is doing well. However many were talking about the train wreck San Jose was after missing the PO's last season (2014/15) and the crap surrounding Thornton/Marleau and the captaincy...they haven't been without their circus acts.

But kudos to the team for being able to stay contending. Also SJ did not have a Kesler and Lou situation where they were purposely disrupting the room. Big difference IMO.

They can win, they can win the cup next year, sign the right players, trade the right players, offer sheet the right players.

Lets just say I'm not putting money on it.

People are trying to start that with posts like this... lol

Matthews is the number 1, lets leave it at that.

I love the passion and enthusiasm, but I see next year being a bottom 8 or 9 finish at best. It's very very hard to predict what is going to happen, especially PRE-draft and PRE-free agency but I would not expect things to be a heck of a lot brighter than it was this year. I think ideally, we make the playoffs and start opening eyes in the 2017/2018 team, realistically.

Huge difference for sure, regardless of the adversity they faced they still showed up and no one wanted to leave (though I wonder how much that has to do with the difference of media attention in SJ vs VAN).
I also think the attitude of those guys doesn't allow for that "country club" atmosphere to grow. Some here hate guys on that team for being a-holes, but they are competitive and are probably a-holes in a good way to their teammates to prevent complacency. As much as I love the Sedins, I cant see them calling out someone with half the impact it might have if someone like Thornton did it, hell even Marleau too

so true. It was like "Eichel's late surge is giving the Oilers something to think about" last year. Try to hype up the draft but it isnt going to happen, just like every other year when the top prospect year long has gone 1st

The problem was the core was untouched long past due. They woke up one day old and had to make many adjustments instead of one or two.

Get back on course, and start transitioning players one or two a year not 15 at a time.

Next year TDL Hansen moved and hopefully Boeser ready

Isn't BB committed to North Dakota for next season?

You honestly believe those guys were purposely disrupting the room....

I feel like some of you guys are getting your programing mixed up with the Bachelor again.

SJ has stayed competitive because like lefty said they drafted and developed talent. They also have been able to sign and trade for effective players. The same people lauding Jumbo and Marleau for being great leaders today were the same people calling them choke artists and gutless a year ago. That stuff is over way overblown...

Yah I get super tired of everyone to make the draft into something controversial by doing this. NHL and Media do this strictly to make it into something bigger than it is.

yes. he already confirmed that and the Canucks support him in that decision. it's a probably a good idea. Canucks can get another decent draft pick...

it's the idiots at TSN and other media trying to hype things up to get viewers.

everyone already knows whoever gets drafted first will essentially wither away their career and never amount to much. it's a shame that some decent young man will have their career derailed just as its getting started.

i felt bad for matthews when he almost started crying when asked how he felt after the lottery. such a sad situation.

Whoever is top ranked for 2017 right now, I would be willing to bet he goes 1st overall in that draft. It isnt always clear cut by now, but I would feel pretty comfortable putting money down on it
