Which is fine but taking Legwand was a favor to OTT

You don't volunteer fr a 4 million dollar 4th liner.

Lehner might be really good, but goalies are found everywhere. It's just another example of Murray only caring about guys he's wanted for a long time

- sbroads24

It was a $3 mil 4th liner player with experience as a number 2 overall pick. I do think he was a throw in, but GMTM may have wanted him and the experience. This is the Pegula has money effect, willing to pay to train the players right and this is the right thing to do. (Even with Gionta, which I know is a pain point)

What's more likely:

Lehner plays like a number 1 goalie

Or

Any of those guys become legitimate top sixers

That's the only question that should be asked. I also don't have an answer one way or the other.

- SDSabre

I think Murray was going for a few angles, knowing goalie pads (sizes) were being discussed that Lehner is one of two goalies that does not have to slim down pads as well as the guy winning the AHL cup (Memorial Cup?), showing he has the experience with high stakes pressure.

I think both are very likely actually. Chad Johnson has played like a number 1 goalie at times as well
- MCGUIZZY

Yes he has. At two different stops actually. He played well in Boston. Played well at times in Buffalo. I think that we can all agree, Lehner is/was/and showed he is the superior goalie. Time will tell, and while it may have been an "overpayment," when has an inner-division trade not been as such? That's why they rarely happen. If Lehner becomes a top-10 goalie, which he very well could be, the team will be set up nicely. The Sabres had too many picks for the contract space allowed coming in the future, so if GMTM thinks that Lehner may be the guy, who am I to disagree. All I know is the Sabres are trending north for first time in a long while. So I'm ok with it... For now.

not sure where i read it, the rumor was edmonton offered either 16 for lehner or 33 for lehner plus legwand (salary dump). he beat edmontons offer. i was not crazy about giving up assets for a goalie, but i like what ive seen so far, provided he stays healthy. keep in mind he is still under contract for 2.25 for this year, rfa after that. there are enough questions that he should not be getting a big raise after this year.

Could have been in a worse spot with any other goalie.

The trade isn't bad because of lehner it's bad because unless you're getting one of the truly elite goalies giving major value for a goaltender in today's NHL is foolish. Majority of them are a reflection of the team in front of them. It's why quick looked like a vezina winner the year the Kings dominated in possession and average when they were just good.

While there are parts of his game that are encouraging, I still have a hard time justifying giving up 21 overall for a player that hasn't played more than 36 games in a given season, let alone the mere 21 he played this season. If I'm giving up a first rounder for a goaltender, he had better be a workhorse.

And my points in the past were this was planned (the RFA with a small raise), so that we dont pay a goalie $6 mil / year for 4-5 more years at least. That was one reason to "over pay" with the 21st pick. But I agree.

I would agree, but remember Schneider (excellent goalie, I think) was traded for the 9th overall pick and was paid a nice salary day one. So I dont think I would ever want to "get" that goalie for that price. Although I do think you can just sub in a new goalie every couple years and be fine, I dont mind a younger goalie growing with the team (with a low cap hit).

Here is the issue with your statement: In 6 seasons, Lehner has never played more than 36 games per season. So what is his actual potential for a full season? Nobody knows. So what exactly did Murray give up a 1st round pick for? because it certainly wasnt for an established player with a good track record.

you can make a case that chad johnson outplayed him

this is why it's a bad trade

if he is a difference maker, it's one thing, but right now lehner is an injury prone goalie that is average when in net

Forget that your sub stinks up the whole Effing plane, the other passengers don't matter, and your goals and desires are most important. You don't have to report to Syracuse.

Your second sentence is why I disagree with giving up 8th overall++for Drouin.
