Why would Washington get rid of their own center depth? Johansson is a consistent 45 point producer for them and they aren't in any cap trouble. And they definitely aren't doing it for Yakupov.

Not get rid of it, but trade and exchange for it. Washington has poopty depth in prospect centermen (Keep in mind the difference between prospect and NHL depth; Washington has great NHL depth at center right now, but their prospect pool at center is a poopbasket). They have good depth at center right now, but in 2-4 years down the road, they'll only have an aging Backstrom, Kuznetsov and veteran players. Even if they hang onto Johansson, their depth at centre will still be above par, maybe good at best. By then, they will be worrying about Backstrom's contract and signing Kuznetsov to a big contract.

As for Yakupov, Washington can definitely take a gamble on a piece like him. They have an aging Beagle , an aging Williams, T.J. Oshie, and perhaps a Joel Ward in Tom Wilson. Yakupov's projection at this point is hard to configure and pinpoint. He can turn into a blue chip elite winger or he might be the next Daigle or maybe he might be just a 3rd liner for the rest of his career.

It all depends on how much Washington wants to gamble. They get some prospects that shore up their depth and those prospects are either gonna be hit, miss, or 50/50. A Yakimov, 2nd or 3rd (Maybe a 4th included?), and Yak might get things started.

Edit: This is all contingent on if we trade RNH. Keep that in mind.
