Vinny was too young for the C and was given back to him eventually as well....pre-Cup win.

Modano handed over the C to Morrow because he was on his way out.

i don't understand why this is still even a topic. everyone here has complained that we don't have a true #1C, and the chance we finally get to draft one, and they want to talk about potentially taking a winger? craziness. laine will be good, but he doesn't win you a cup, just like ovy doesn't win you a cup. you need that big body center who does everything, and matthews is exactly that.

I just like the years of info we have on Matthews.. he has been Elite at every level..has outscored some really good players at the same age ..Kane, Eichel, Kessel.. but one tournament..thats is pretty meh tournament..huge conclusions are being made.

Getting a Kovalchuk or another Kessel is great.. but what if you pass on a Kopitar or Toews?

some people are born winners, others are born losers. Thornton has all the skill but he just isn't a winner. my guess is whoever wins will be from the east. Thornton and Jay Bo are born losers, so they will find a way to lose.

Vatanen and Lindholm are both RFA. I think he'd move Lindholm before Theodore, both left handed, and Vatanen is right-handed, a well known commodity. All depends what Murray's plan is.

True..its says management does stupid things..

I hope the Leafs are able to package the 1st round pick they got from Pittsburgh with a 2nd and 3rd round pick and move up into the top 10 to get a decent Dman. Or stand pat and draft the best player available. Not keen on them trading down though.

I also hope they move up, and they do have several trading chips that they did not seem to have with previous few regimes. I hope they target a defenseman specifically. Moving into the top 10 while enticing - seems unlikely - look at those teams - only Edmonton at 4 will likely move their pick - for a defenseman - which we do not have. Reilly too good, Gardiner not good enough.

Best chance for them to move up would probably be Boston's 14th pick or Carolina's 21'st pick. (Latter more likely) They could possibly land Bean, Fabbro, Mcavoy, Niemelainen or Stanley. All of these will be projects especially Stanley - but at 6'7" and a decent skater - the right coaching and training - could fill a need down the road.

agreed. it's been known for a while that matthews was the #1. laine has come out of no where really. matthews has consistently been elite, so you know he's not a flash in the pan guy. kovalchuk and kessel are great, but they don't win you cups, and neither have. you don't build your team around a winger. i take kopitar and toews over any winger, including ovy.

Thornton is just an older (much much older) version of Sakic and Vinny, as in he had the C removed before a Cup win - assuming the Sharks win, of course.

He's been great, arguably the best set up man in this era......but not the best leader apparently. That's why I'd question if he's 'everything you'd want in a center'.
