Yes, and this seems like a case of the Flyers' players needing to play better than other playoff teams' players
- Just5

Different argument. None of the players you mentioned are better than Matt Read. That simple. There's plenty to talk about with Read, and the last two seasons he had, and room for criticism. I'll take Read over Upshall.

It is less in Read's favor w/ 7 PP points to 0, but it's still a 4 player to 1 comparison. Since we are talking ES play, should we perhaps mention that Read had the third best possession numbers on the team this year behind Couturier and Raffl? None of those players sniffed that (Upshall actually was OK). He's still a respectable all around player, much as he is a whipping boy. His scoring is disappointing, but that doesn't make him a poor player. He is still useful. On that Laughton-Cousins-Read line that saw late season success, he was very much the glue player who did all the little things for them.

He's a very expensive role player. Perhaps he needs a better mix of linemates. He seems to have lost a step for sure from his earlier years. He's worthless in shootout situations now. I guess maybe because he has a limited repertoire. I have a hard time chocking up his last couple poor years scoring wise to just bad luck. It would be helpful if he were a bigger body. He's not very skilled nor very fast at this point which makes him a disappointing player in regard to his contract

Lets face it. He's a dime a dozen player at this point

This series has to be crushing your spirit. All the big bodies and such

Yep. Like Fabbri and Schwartz and Pavelski. Bums the lot of 'em!

You can win with a bigger team like San Jose or St. Louis. You can win with a smaller team like Tampa or Pitt. Some people only think the first part is true. I don't want a small team, I want a "better" team. Some people I question whether they really want a better team or just a "bigger" team under the impression they're one in the same.

I never said it was bad luck. Frankly, I think his issues are pretty easy to pinpoint scoring wise: lost that extra gear in transition and most importantly, doesn't shoot enough or drive the paint. I don't think that is necessarily uncorrectable.

He is expensive, but not exorbitantly so. And a lack of scoring does not mean you're not still a solid 3 zone support player. Matt Read will improve a line's fundamentals like he did for the Cousins line, or even when he was with Coots early in the year. I wish he was the Read of old, but he still improves the play of his linemates. There's something to that. There are players like RJ and Vinny who were expensive and useless. Read is just the former.

He's nowhere approaching that Vinny/RJ realm. I'll trust your assessment here. There's no real hurry to move on from him this summer. The forward depth of this team is severely lacking. It's why I find the Laine proposals earlier in the thread to be pretty wild. The flyers don't have the organizational depth to make a deal like that. They need more Schenn's, more Raffl's, more Coots. Not another Jake or G

You're probably one of those "casual" gamers who plays Angry Birds and Mario Party 6 on GameCube with your boys once every handful of months. Bless your heart.

nah...I don't play many games. I don't have the time to get sucked in, nor do I have the funds.

Instead, I watch playthroughs with commentary on youtube. In the middle of uncharted 4 right now.

Brodziak + Reaves + Upshall + Ott: 31 points in 231 combined games this year

Read: 26 points in 79 games

Matt Read is not what he used to be, but all the hate he gets is beyond me.

I think it has a lot to do with his salary

I DON'T HAVE A GOOD CPU
I DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR A PS4 AND/OR ITS GAMES
I DON'T HAVE TIME TO SPEND GETTING SUCKED IN TO A VIDEO GAME
I'M SORRY OK

Would definitely be tempted to get Rainbow 6 Siege, Rocket League, and Subnautica off steam if I get a halfway decent laptop though

Bro, I understand you not being able to play games. Watching games though...that's always been weird to me. Maybe I just get flashbacks of sleepovers where I'd sit there and get to watch my friend play Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts and God of War...

Eh...with the way games are so heavily storylined nowadays, it's more like watching a movie than anything

Sports hernias are a fancy way of saying hernia. They are a female dog if not treated. I personally dealt with mine for two years before someone figured out what was going on. Yay for modern medicine. :-)

Really good write-up of Hagg's struggles this year. This phantoms blogger does excellent work. Has all year. He has a thorough Goulbourne review upcoming this week.

- Just5

Having seen Hägg sporadically during the season and having talked to people in the organization, there's no doubt he underachieved for most of the season after a very good training camp. However, he was very good in the final month of the season -- basically where they were hoping he'd be by the end of the year minus the season-long roller coaster road that preceded it.
