I look at it as long term viability and cap management. I think that we'd have a conflict in the next couple of years, if Matthews becomes a star. Do you tell Stamkos to play the wing on the top line, or move to the second line? Should we have a second line centre making $10 million per year? Once all of these young players come out of their entry level deal, they'll need that money to pay Nylander, Marner, Matthews and possibly Vesey. If it was a deal that was in the $8 million a year times 5 years, then it's viable for Stamkos.

If you sign Stamkos, it'll have a no trade deal of some kind attached to it. Submit 4 teams, or something like that. Better to just let the youngsters on the team to grow together.
