1 year 5 mill then trade him at the deadline. I know benning wont make moves like this but if we can sign a few guys to 1 year deasl like the devils and leafs did last year then move them at the deadline it would greatly speed up the stock piling of prospects.
- mauryballstein

The problem is the UFAs know that, only desperate players will sign with a bottom 10 team, knowing that they will be traded at TDL, and desperate players won't help this team out of the basement, drafting and development will do that. Is signing Matthias and trading him for a 4th a great way to build a team?

That would be ideal; however, unfortunately not overly realistic. This could be his last big contract so you know he is going to be seeking both money and term. Also, I think he seems to fit very well in the Blue's system so I think he will be re-signed by them during the off season. Although he is a local boy so you never know

So, we'll be getting a good prospect at #5 if we retain the pick.

Nothing more, nothing less. It's nothing to get overly excited about and it sure doesn't make up for the torture of being so bad this season.

But it kinda does, it gives the organization some quality positions to draft from, rounds one thru seven. We saw a lot of the kids this year, they were competitive at times, baby steps. Building takes time.

It went better than usual, I had 2 different people come by so it was broken up into 3 different sessions, worked better that way.

Wholly poop Diamonds Are Forever is on.

I understand that, but it's not like we're getting a can't miss prospect. Sure, it looks like they'll have an impact down the road but there are no guarantees.

All i'm saying is that there's no surefire reason to believe they'll be much better than someone picked in the 10 spot.

"Sure-fire" no...but the probabilities suggest they will, still gotta put in the pre-draft work though. Which Benning does.

To me it's about drafting well, having someone who's competent at it, for a number of years.

They should sign Tallon as an asst to do the trading.

Of course there is no guarantee but the expectations are greater based on draft position. Also, just based on stats, it's not unreasonable to expect a quality player at 5 more than at 10.

You don't have to replace them, this team is not competing for the playoffs, we're a bottom 10 team and will be for the next few years.

Not sure why you mention him but can you imagine if they'd have put resources into drafting back in 1990.

Drafted Nedved 3rd overall, which is fine, but Jagr went three later at 5.
Drafted good old Canadian boy Antoski at 18, Keith Tkachuk & Marty Brodeur went directly after,
Draft Jiri Slegr early in the second round, 23rd overall, Doug Weight went eleven picks later.

If they hadn't traded Neely they could've selected local boy Joe Sakic in 87 and still had Neely.

Neely, Sakic, Tkachuk, Linden, Bure, Brodeur, Jagr & Weight
