It's why I don't want to see him here. We're not near enough to be a playoff team and he would be a drain on the cap, for 7 years. He's injury prone and it'll be an issue, once Matthews hits stardom. Will Stamkos want to be a winger or a 2nd line centre? Is $10 million per year for a second line centre good cap management? Just keep the rebuild going on an even keel.....less chance of making mistakes with overpriced talent.

But if he goes to Montreal they are a cup contender.

Stamkos gives them a number 1 centre, but the Cap problems will be immense. I hope that they pull that parachute....it'll be 10 years in the wilderness. They have very little on the farm going forward.

I don't think Stamkos can hold this Leaf team over the barrel. Shanny and Lou will make the offer they think is fair and if Stamkos wants more he will go elsewhere. Burke and Nonis would have given him whatever he wanted, but I don't get that impression from the current management.

If he signed a 5 year $8 million dollar contract, I'm all for that. But at $10 million for 7 years, it'll be a detriment to the cap, when players like Marner, Matthews and Nylander come out of their entry level contracts. We have other holes that need to be cemented first, before we consider an overpaid second line centre, or a scoring winger that hasn't scored at the same pace, for the last 2 years, from his early years.

And I was thinking about something the other day. What if Shanny and Lou say that no player can make more than Babcock. He's the boss and his salary will reflect that. RFA's won't have a choice, and UFA's are typically not that high profile anyways.

I worry about the Centennial year over-reach, wanting to make the playoffs during the 100th Anniversary. We have a good young team coming......we need patience. We need to add more key assets. A front line goaltending prospect and another blue chip defensive prospect. It's wasting a cap asset, to sign this guy that'll just ruin next year's forward progress. Leafs management needs to take the pressure off of this very young corp. Just let them progress as they should. Stamkos is not a fit.

Signing Stamkos to a 7 year deal at 11 mil per would be a reason not to. Signing at something more reasonable and team friendly would not be. That probably won't happen though, which is why I have maintained that Stamkos will play elsewhere.
