You do have a point. I thought Lidstrom was bigger he certainly played bigger. In any event were originally discussing Barrie who is 5'10". Can you think of a contender in the NHL that has a 5'10" defender in their top pair?
A few years back Ottawa had to make a choice between two defensenen, one bigger (chara) and one smaller skill guy (redden) how did that work out for the sens or rangers - winsix
Lidstrom was strong and was rarely caught out of position. That and his skating are why he seemed to be bigger and was able to cover more area. Hockey IQ through the roof. |

Maybe the smartest Dman who ever played. Once the Yzermans, Shanny's and Fedorov's were gone it was apparent that Lidstrom was the straw that stirred the drink. |

Agree, top players are generally smart, skill did not help Iafrate much. Kariya was smart but career got cut short by a Gary Suter cheap shot. |

23-26 minute a night Jared Spurgeon is a whopping 5'9 (and extremely underrated) just as one example
Also, PPP did a feature a few years ago where they took all the players in the league to find a "typical" player... the average Defenseman was 6'2 and 210lbs. So if we treat this as the average, you then start to include players like Karlsson, Subban, Klingberg, Josi, Brodie, Gostisbhere who are below average in one or both of these categories. Hell, at 6'1 195 even Drew Doughty is likely at least one standard deviation below in the weight category. |

I don't understand what point this guy is trying to make. Bigger defensemen are automatically better? |

Loved dougie, really like Komarov, how did it feel when we lost to the bruins someone smashed one our best players into the boards or smashed his face like mcade and Kelly did and we retaliated by giving them a huggy poo |

hard to argue that all things being equal, size isn't an advantage.
for me, having mix of players including bigger players throughout the lineup is important to building a winner.
i think having a 1c or 2c (mathews) and a 1d or 2d (?) 6'2" or bigger is a pretty big advantage. otherwise, don't i don't care so much by position. |

Not the point. Need skill. Need IQ. Need some grit. Need some size. Leafs have few big skill guys and could use a few.
