hedman is a top 3 defender in the game.

see i guess i walk the line between the middle. its not an award for best defensive defenseman. its not the art ross for the position. its the best overall guy.

like when people say toews is better than crosby. yeah. toews is a little better defensively than crosby. but not by enough to be better overall. its hard to put arbitrary numbers on it, but if you said crosby is a 7 defensively and toews is a 9, but crosby is a 10 offensively while toews is a 7. overall, crosby would be the better total.

i look at the norris the same way. again. those numbers are just rough arbitrary things and it gets virtually impossible to split hairs. but my main point is i dont think the offensive side should be the sole indicator, but it cant be discarded either.

(frank) im drunk and hate everything.

- stayinthefnnet

That's why I think it's hilarious when people talk about "2 way players" like they are something from another planet.

People act like Pat Kane lays down and takes a nap when the puck leaves rhe offensive zone while Toews plays center, defense and goalie all at once. If the player is that good offensively, it shouldn't be a criticism

I'm not giving it to the best defensive defense man either. There has to be a mix of both. That is why I don't think Karlsson should ever be a finalist, because one component it takes is average.
- Oneonta Penguin

But he is head and shoulders above everyone besides maybe Letang and Burns offensively, and not that much worse in his end than the two.

Points are points, it's how you inevitably win games. If he just had great possession numbers and not 80 points I'd agree. If the possession numbers don't eventually lead to scoring then it's pretty useless. But Karlsson does it

Well, I guess the Pens team knows Tampa aren't here to lick stamps!!

Got to get on the same page as these (frank)ers & turn it up! Looks like they came to take a few risks & pinpoint who they wanted to hit (read that as hurt ), & go 1-0 up. Mission accomplished.

Pens need to step back on that ice & play like they did to beat the Caps.

Just a note of congratulations to the Bolts - they definitely don't (frank) around, targeted our best 2 D men to hurt & got them. The Caps got arguably our worst!

Hoping Tanger & Dumo are all good to go game 2!!!

Now who was saying Tampa aren't a dirty team????

I hope they get ripped a new one by sullivan. losing to a tampa team WITHOUT bishop, stamkos and stralman is unforgivable. don't care about how good tampa plays. that is just UNFORGIVABLE

We just laid an egg. Pretty simple. Hopefully 2 days off will get us where we need to be. Crosby needs to do some soul searching. Malkin needs a little bit better linemates. Whatch some tape on this new goalie..find some weak spots.

And all yall was talking bout pens in 5 and 6.

This thing will go 7 unless pens Play like they did last night then Tampa in 5.

pens in 5 can still happen if they play like they did vs caps they should have this. if they play like they did yesterday. then it is easy 4 games for tampa. sry but not sry. especially if letang is hurt

Well we won the stats but not the game. So much for stats. We gave up really good high quality scoring opportunities. I felt even though we had more scoring chances they looked more elusive in our zone and faked our defense out of their jocks quite a bit. Need to have a greater sense of urgency and make better decions in our own zone.

Sid and Malkin have got to start shooting the biscuit. How many times do they gain the line and then dish to the wing? Have some conviction and fire it on net or try to drive the net. Mix it up a bit.
- brienstel

Makin had 7 shots. WTF? We outshot them by a large margin. We just made bad decions with puck especially in our own zone. Plus just not having a a we of urgency and desperation. It was like an emotional let down after beating the Caps. However Tampa has a solid defense.

The other team gets paid too. Did you think this was going to be easy? They are playing the team that went to the finals last year. Stop throwing around words like unforgivable, and take a deep breath. It's one game. The Lightning played a good road game last night. The Pens weren't awful, but they need more attention to detail if they are going to beat this team.

IIRC, Malkin usually eats Tampa alive when he plays them.
- Oneonta Penguin

Only skater that really wanted it last night. We have to maximize him this series. He's bought into the narrative that he's a TBL killer and is on a mission. Whether we do that by putting him with Crosby or giving him Hagalen and Kessel I don't care but we have to get him away from Kunitz and Fehr. I'm not a fan of playing Malkin on the wing or breaking up HBK but (frank) man. It was so painful seeing Geno doing Geno things but it amounting to nothing because his linemates couldn't do squat.

OH, wait.. we talking about the best defenseman in the game? don' forget the fact that he was 7th among dmen in blocked shots, and 2nd among dmen in takeaways... but you know.. defensive stats are none of my business.

Anyone else notice Malkin screaming at Hornqvist on the powerplay late last night? Malkin passed to Letang and Horn intercepted the pass for a one timer and that Russian POS started screaming at Hornqvist right on the ice like a little girl. Malkin first playing like poop and then screaming at his teammates on the ice prob makes Tampa's bench feel warm and fuzzy inside. Wonder why Adams had to step up for the team and show Malkin whats up in practice? Also this just in, Murray's pretty slow side to side.

Once again with the Adams/Glass stuff. Get over it. He's retired. Sorry we didn't extend him for another three years.

Should have made him the coach/gm/player. Sorry I demand a little more than toe drags from the hockey team I root for.

in no way did I think it would be easy. but come on... I have followed tampa all season and playoffs and can say we should be able to win against them. in this game they also missed stamkos (best player) stralman (4th best player) and bishop (3rd best player atm) AND they lost... sure it is not unforgivable but if there ever was 1 game you should win it was that one but they didn't... it made me majorly disappointed...

Better team on paper yes, but this team goes through stretches during games where they seem to forget its the stanley cup playoffs. The team doesn't have a consistent killer instinct or drive. Have to be willing to die every shift and we go through stretches where it looks like we forget that.

This team just made it to the Stanley Cup finals last season... even without Stralman and Stamkos, this team is as dangerous as ever. Vasilevskiy isn't that big of a drop off from Bishop, he's still a very talented tendy. I understand that if theres ever a game they should want to win, it's this one.. but on the other end, the Lightning are playing harder with Bishop out, they've been playing well without Stralman and Stamkos, so it's not like those guys were JUST announced out of the lineup.

What is the over and under Callahan has a hearing? I am saying there is none coming, and the 5 minute major is all he gets. Letang was suspended 1 game for a less dangerous hit. The excuse that Letang turned last second is garbage as well. Callahan had plenty of time to not deliver that hit. In addition taking your forearm and driving your opponents face into the glass while boarding him is just salt in the wound.
