In all seriousness I think it might actually have something to do with too many 1st overalls. Remember when Sather 1st went to the Rangers and he started bringing in all those high priced all stars. That team was totally dysfunctional. To many alpha males all thinking they're the best and should have the puck. Too many 'cocks' in the roost in EDM.

You're suggesting a power struggle? No, I think there is and was a serious lack of any veteran that can say (frank) all to Hall, Ebs, etc, and get their attention. Who's gonna tell Hall to do this or that in the locker room. Never discount the value of a vet who can tell the boys where the bear poops in the buckwheats and then go out next shift and show them. A Joe Thornton , Jaromir Jagr or a Marian Hossa would make a huge difference.
