They might be pushing the cap trying to win a cup in 5-6 years and that 1.2 Mill could be the difference in gaining that final big piece. Plain and simple it hurts the team for 6 years and yes it does matter.

With a cap ceiling over 70 million to work with any NHL management team who can't absorb 1.2 million deserves to be fired.

Ok I might be misunderstanding this but a team can apply the LTIR space as soon as they get close to the cap ceiling... At any point of the year except the summer?

I won't deny that I might have this wrong.

That is correct.

so you're saying we should've kept Clarkson bc of the fact it would create extra capspace during season (as opposed to whole season)...?
very logical...

- MaximusAurelius

no.

we should not have retained on kessel.

clarkson was proably the worst contract in the league and anything was better than keeping him.

Thanks burn for clarifying that.

Yeah, that cap flexibility is far better than having clarkson scoring his 20 goals a contract.

You think he can get to 20?

Edit: I know you aren't talking per year.

Not sure what your trying to say here. So Pitt's management who didn't want to absorb Kessel's 1.2 mill deserves to be fired?

I know... 4 goals a year is a bit generous isn't it?

Spott confirmed he had asked Kessel to change his defensive breakouts, this actually happened.

The question is would Kessel have listened to the $ 8 M man Babcock vs an assistant coach fresh up from the Marlies?

With them being pretty close, I can't see the Leafs passing on the centre, they need them so badly.
- LeafMan

I have not seen much of the whc but from what I have seen, Matthews looks like his game will translate MUCH better.

I would seriously consider Puljajarvi over Laine.

Holy hell man. The Penguins had their team core already built... They don't have the 3-4 year outlook the leafs have... The leafs can build with the 1.2 million in mind.

The pens couldn't.... They are well past that point.

1.2 million to consider for a rebuilding team is peanuts... It won't matter at all. They can plan around it.

Everyone is thinking Kessel is this great player that the leafs lost out on because of his production in the playoffs yet no one seems to want to address why he's having success.

Guess who isn't facing top pairing D very much anymore? That's right, Kessel. Opposition top pairing defenses are too busy playing against Crosby's and Malkin's lines... Meaning good ol fat Phil gets to play against 2nd and 3rd pairing defenses.

For an elite goal scorer (yes I'll happily give him that) that's about as good as it gets.

$6.8m for a winger scoring 59pts on a third line. Yah the Leafs got fleeced!

$6.8 M for a player that just got you into the third round, where salaries aren't being paid any more, for a minimum of 2 home dates and the ticket revenue, jerseys, concessions that go along with it.

I think they would do it again for 2 middling prospects and a very late first rounder.

Jerry has 50k dollars and wants to buy a car to drive 40miles to work every day and same distance back (that's 80miles per day.. )

OPTION A: Jerry buys a nice Japanese car for 35k and spends the rest on gas, insurance and some nice extras, morning coffee, etc ect

OPTION B: Jerry buys a 49k luxury dream car. He walks to and back from work (80nice miles!) and gets to drive his car 20 days per year.

OPTION C: Jerry suggests to the luxury car dealer to sell him the 49k luxury car for 30k.

somehow some folks on these boards think option b and c are the better / more likely alternatives helping out Jerry...

That player is playing against second and third pairing defenses. Big shock he's having success.

The Penguins also have absolutely 0$ cap space... With 2.35million applied from LTIR.

They better win this year because after this they're (frank)ed cap wise.

Wasn't he rated over Laine maybe 4 months ago? I'm not saying things don't change, but what caused the shift?

Point production? Probable NHL translation of skills? Style? I know it's not size, because from what I know they're similar in that regard.

You can plan for it sure, but it still matters.
