You guys focus too much on stats
That value of the culture change that occurred once kessel was moved is what was worth the most to the leafs. They needed to make a immediate trade to show players, staff, sponsors, and fans that the shanahan rebuild was real. - Dozzer
Players, staff, sponsors and fans wouldn't believe the rebuild was real if Kessel was traded on August 1st instead of July 1st? Interesting.

22 days after Kyle "I don't have enough experience yet to be an NHL GM" Dubas made that deal Lou Lams was hired to be GM.
In retrospect, it may have been a good idea to be a little more patient. I guess the argument was that since the deal was made Jul. 1st, Pitt needed it done so they could focus on the vast talent available as UFA instead?
It reminds me of when the Jays needed to trade the best pitcher in the game during the offseason, so they promoted a 30 something former mailroom worker to do it. They received a number of prospects, all of which amounted to next to nothing. - 1979AD
Personally, I think the return itself was fine.
To sweeten the deal, I think we should have utilized short-term cap space and actual $; not long-term cap space.
I am under the impression the leafs picked up the tab on kessel’s $4M July 1 bonus from last year; good for them.
Maybe Lou could have convinced Scuderi to waive his ntc instead of taking the salary retention; something dubas & co couldn’t do.
So if nothing else, the need for senior hockey guy became apparent. Lou’s on board now to help out going forward.
In other "the world has gone crazy" news, James Tanner, who many of you remember as the guy who think the game of hockey can be explained through a spreadsheet, is now arguing that the single greatest determinant of success is luck.
So why even bother with advanced stats? - Atomic Wedgie
Tanner
In all honesty, why do people still (ever?) read his stuff?

To me it would show them wanting to leave such an important trade in the hands of a crafty old experienced vet instead of a kid.
Anyway - Pitts made the playoffs this year so it all worked out. - 1979AD
The trade was about culture change... Fast and immediate culture change.
Not about assets at all. Well it wasn't the most important aspect of the deal.
Making that move when they did showed the rest of the players this management meant business. Giving them two months to get their own poop together preparedness wise for camp.

Babcock would bench kessel so often for not playing to his systems the leafs would have been paying 9 million per for a bench warmer. - Dozzer
You telling me that wouldn't have been fun to watch?
Because last year was an absolute poop show. It was a fat couple in a restaurant fighting over dessert - you were there, it was happening right in front of you, and you were kinda curious in a poopy kinda way, but watching it made you sick and horrified, and you felt ashamed afterwards.

You know damn well what I mean.... The leafs finished last this year due to lack of talent... Not like previous years where players just essentially did what they want and then mailed it in once the season went off the rails.
I have no problem with losing if the players are on board with the coach and his systems. The talent will come and what has been established coupled with that will turn this leafs team into something we haven't seen in Toronto in a long long time.
