3rd reason is he has a .921 SV% over three+ years and over 5,000 shots faced as a Flyer. That's a really big sample size.

I understand sample sizes.

How big of a sample did Bishop have before got the number one job in Tampa?

He has been very good for a few years now when healthy

He's played more than 40 games in a season, once in his career.

And the people will defend Neuvirth if he gives up the same goal because he played really well for us for 3 months.

Mason lets up a bad goal - burn him
Neuvirth/Emery give up a bad goal - they've played well for us.

But this year when did Neuvirth really struggle? Late EDM game. I think the one game against NJD.

You mean after he was traded for a 4th round pick a had to beat out the great Anders Lindback for the starting gig?

Bishop got the number one job in Tampa in 13-14, following a 9 game audition after being traded from Ottawa at the 12-13 deadline.

Mason got the number one job in Philly in 13-14, following a 7 game audition after being traded from Columbus at the 12-13 deadline.

He didn't struggle for a long stretch, but from January on, he wasn't nearly as good as he was early on.

But this is ignored, because this town loves its backup goalies second only to white backup QBs.

So going into this training camp is this a goalie competition? Or is Mason de facto number one?

I'd say Mase is number one but could change based on actual play

Basically, it just seems like Neuvirth is teflon like Chase Utley and that Mason is scrutinized like Ryan Howard. Both goalies had good stretches and both had some stinkers. Neuvirth had a ridiculously hot start and cooled at the end, while Mason had a more up-and-down year, more consistent moth-to-month. They should both be criticized the same, but that isn't the case, which is why there are so many "Masonites" as you Neuvirthites have deemed us.

To me, it's Mason's crease unless he's outplayed. If he's having issues and Neuvirth plays well, Neuvirth should get the start. Mason has 3+ years of strong goaltending here, Neuvirth has 3+ strong months of goaltending here.

I blame Gostisbehere. Neuvirth fell off the cliff right about the time he arrived.

My preference would be a full blown competition in camp and whoever is better starts game 1. The Flyers have started slow two straight years. (Not blaming the goalies for all that). I would start the guy who played best in camp and try to get a good start to the season.

You know the one thing that bothers me, and maybe I see it completely wrong, but I feel he overplays stuff to the side. Like a shot goes wide but he slides out past the post and then needs to really work to get back in good position.

But what are fans supposed to do. If your number one goalie gives up a weak one are you not allowed to criticize them?

We get on Giroux and Voracek when they don't do there job? Hell we still get on Jeff Carter for missing the net against Chicago.

I think what bugs people is that if you do say something about Mason you have 20 people that seem this need to jump on you a defend him.

Haunts my dreams, imagining what a game 7 for the cup wouldve been back then in my early drinking years......
