Wasn't Keith I was thinking of - if it applies to him, why don't we ever talk about it like we do Hossa's?

Think Pronger/Luongo were two others that this impacted... I don't think (though not 100% sure) Keith's contract would be viable under current CBA but it doesn't have quite the same potential to burn us at this stage (hopefully) as Hossas does but we are def benefitting from Keith's contract

Plus Shaw can play effectively on lines 1-4 at LW, RW, & C.

Can't say that about Kruger. If Kruger was in the $2M range, I'd be happier.

Plus, I am a big Kruger fan, but like I said earlier, not at $3M+ cap hit.

- Dannyboy

If Panarin doesn't earn his bonuses... Well... yeah. This discussion is a moot point. Seriously. Oh yeah, and if Bickell had been bought out last year...

Appreciate the razzing. I would like it if TT went anywhere. Not a fan!
- Antz96

TT isn't going anywhere, IMO, because the Hawks #1 need this summer is cap space. Why would they trade a decent bottom 6 forward making less than $1 million this year? Two other reasons they don't move him are: 1) He didn't play that well this year, so his return won't be very good, and 2) He's a RFA next year, so they can still choose to trade his rights, or just take the draft picks from the team with whom he signs.

Oversimplification.

Would you swap Mason for Crawford? Maybe better put: who wouldn't?

For the Hawks, Mason becomes a one-year bridge as a highly paid backup. For the Flyers, a team on the rise, you can go pretty deep next year guaranteed with a Corey Crawford.

I know you guys disagree, but it does seem to make some sense as a possibility.

- John Jaeckel

Here's the fly in the ointment...

Trading Crawford is just kicking the can down the road unless you take back little if any money.

Mason makes $4mil....If he comes in and plays well his next contract is in the $5.5-$6 mill neighborhood.

If Darling gets half the starts and does well in the playoffs his next contract is probably close to $4 mill....

Not sure the front office takes the risk to save minimal money to trade one of their best players over the past 2 seasons.

If by chance the Hawks miss the playoffs some of the buzz disappears no matter how many Cups they have won recently...A sizeable risk as with their payroll they need 21K+ every game.

Kruger wouldn't be my first choice to trade but he is just as likely not to hold up as Shaw is, and maybe the front office would rather have 65. AA could fill the same role as Kruger if they decide to keep TT that might be the ticket.

1) if he's healthy
2) you get no value for him if you sign him to a big deal and he can't play anymore at some point during the deal

There is something I'm not saying here. Connect the dots.

Completely agree. If you rephrase the question as "If you could cancel out one of the opposition's best centers for 3.5m/yr, would you?" a lot more people would say yes.

And that's why Shaw will be making 3x more than Weise on the next contract. From a salary cap pov, Weise is more valuable than Shaw to this team. (Of course, every one here would prefer Shaw).
- hawks2010

No, he isn't. You are assuming Weise wants to sign for what he made last season.

So lets get rid of TT and Crawford and keep Shaw at 4yrs at 3MM.
- Sn1362

Maybe... Think Shaw is worth about $3M AAV. Compare his stats to those of Alex Killorn (signed at $2.6M AAV) and even Kris Versteeg (signed last contract at $4.4M AAV).

Because Keith signed his contract when he was 26.

We will never know, but when I saw that yellow belly, gutless Rundblad in the lineup for Game 7 ahead of Rosy or even Svedburg, I just concluded Q was on the 3rday of a bad bender. And yes, I think the team will regret that St.Louis series and giving away 2 games on home ice. But wasn't that the way it played out all season vs the Blues, no matter who was in the lineup?

Connecting the dots I'd hazard a guess that

1. Shaw isn't currently completely healthy, or
2. His back and/or other injuries are such that the Hawks think it's likely he will get injured before the end of any new contract if they were gonna try to sign him to a big one. They are only guaranteed to get value in return if they trade him.

Edit: JJ has previously mentioned the FO's concerns about Shaw's durability/health and his back in particular. He probably wants more term than they think he will last for

There are reasons they consider dealing guys that none (or most) of us never really know.

I have heard "talk" about Campbell but it's all sounded like conjecture til now—what I heard anyway.

- John Jaeckel

Not that it means anything, but Campbell did a 2 hour guest host gig today on the David Kaplan show (ESPN 1000). Interesting perspectives on a number of sports from him, one of which was his take on Stephen Strasburg taking a perceived below market deal even though Boras is his agent - in a nutshell he said you can't be afraid to tell your agent I have made enough money, and this is where I want to be, even if it is for less money...

It seems likely Shaw has back problems...Last year in the playoffs although he played through it and at the end of this past season.

If it comes down to the health concerns of Shaw and Kruger...It's a tossup for me who can hold up longer and Kruger may be limited to taking faceoffs on only one side.

Would the loss of Shaw be more tolerable with the additions of Kempny and Campbell? - making the D look something like this:

I know you hate Toews but I'm not going to ignore his contributions to the team because he had a poopty year while injured for at least part of it. Without Toews they don't have 3 cups. There's a reason when they ask GMs if they could build a team around one current player they all pick Toews and not Crosby or Ovie or Stamkos or other players that have consistently put up more points than Toews.

You've been extremely clear about your thoughts on him, so I know you feel differently, and I think we should just agree to disagree

ETA: and my point wasn't even about Toews worrying about the lineup. My point was that Q throwing the players under the bus for something that was his own doing was lame

- maria_wyeth

If we are to simply agree to disagree, does this mean you'll stop your hate posts about Q? Or I just need to stop pointing out all the excuses Toews is allowed for his dismal season and playoffs?

And if "most GMs" allegedly want Toews (not sure at 10.3million) is supposed to hold weight, what about Q getting voted by players as the coach most all want to play for?

I'm with ya dude. Imagine what Toews' points would have been if he was centering Panarin and Kane...

And if there's a player besides Kane who is gonna do whatever he can to improve in the offseason it's Toews.

- maria_wyeth

Kane produced when he had Bolland....Handzus...or Richards on his line/as his center.

Maybe Toews shouldn't have demanded 10.3 mil if he needed Saad or Sharp in order to be productive?

Toews gets "made up injury" excuses for poor season he did not live up to his contract. But Bickell who is legitimately not the same after actual surgeries, gets no excuses

Toews gets a free pass because they won Cups in the past, but Q doesn't as the coach of the team and second winningest in history

Why do the highest paid player in the league allowed the free pass but others not the same?

It's got nothing to do with Toews hate or Q love - but the reason they were in the cap crunch was Toews and Kane. Kane won the scoring title and the MVP. Toews had a horrible season. Hopefully his albatross contract doesn't continue the breakup of the team, but there's a very good chance it will. He going to need to produce a helluva lot more with less help next year, I hate to inform people

So either be ok with this team offense as is or raise expectations from Toews since he demanded the money

And not sure every GM would take Toews over Crosby, at least not this one
