I think the trend is teams are going to extend good young players to longer term, coming out of their EL deals, rather than risk losing a very good player at 25 or 26 because he came into the league at 18 or 19.
- MJL

Surely teams will want to do that and many of them will succeed. But if Stamkos does in fact leave and go somewhere like Torono...it could start something. Essentially he will be guaranteeing himself top dollar and still has the ability to get another big contract, most likely. It is the perfect scenario for someone his age

CF% Rel is an awful stat in my opinion. Compare players, playing in different situations, with different teammates, against different players, and endless different variables, in the game of hockey. It's a useless stat in my opinion.
- MJL

Like most stats, it has a time and a place, but most often gets used as though it proves whether or not a guy is good at possession. There are instances where that is the case though, for example Justin Schultz on the Penguins. He scored some points early on and everyone talked about how just getting out of EDM was amazing. Meanwhile the CF% rel sticks out like a sore thumb since even though his numbers are better than EDM, he is a boat anchor on the Pens.

With the Flyers picking around 18, later in the first would you be willing to do something like Laughton and 1st for Trouba?

Seems like WPG is looking to move him.

That's interesting. Trouba looked like a surefire #1, but had some struggles and injuries, and has been inconsistent the last 2 years. He may be more of a Tyler Myers than an Alex Pietrangelo, but he's still only 22 and is an RFA. I think they'd want more, but I would do that plus the Chicago 2nd.

Just thinking since there seems to be a drop off later in this draft, would you get more impact from using it for a player like Trouba over drafting someone like Max Jones.

I think Trouba has that first pair potential to pair with someone like Provorov in the future.

Or if you want a forward what about, dare I say, trade with Rangers for Krieder. They could use the 1st rounder since they don't have a ton of cap space and need to start replenishing the system.

They'll get some relief by getting rid of Boyle, but they will need some help since guys like Miller, Hayes, Yandle (if they keep him), and Stalberg. But yeah, they've made the Homer-esque mistake of throwing away 1sts. I brought up a Kreider trade with midnight marauder, but it likely centers around Sanheim and a 1st.

I agree, generally, but we did trade them Eric Lindros. Although the last trade between the 2 was for Malakhov in the 03/04 season (I don't count the Newbury/Syvret deal).

Yeah.

The more I think about it I wonder if the first would be better used on a more know product then on a drafted player. Unless someone really drops.

Guys like Trouba, Kreider, Jaden Schwartz, Nichushkin.

Teams the might prefer the first rounder due to other contracts they have and having to sign some of these guys.

Anisimov was a pretty valuable part of that line and they also gained cap space, which was kind of the main objective. Could argue they shouldve gotten more but thats what sucks about being cap strapped
