I'm mixed on my opinion of this move. I'm not in Vancouver, so going to Giants games were low on my priority because of getting there wasnt very convenient, though I like the entertainment value of watching them play live. I also think that the communities are a little underserved in Surrey, Langley, Aldergrove for that kind of entertainment. BCHL does a decent job (Rivermen actually had top in-house production for that level because of the LEC), but the Giants will bring that next level and definitely bring more of these associations out to the rink on a regular basis. The downside is that its a smaller rink and well outside Vancouver. 5k attendance just seems small for the WHL and a steep drop for what has been a very successful franchise. I hope they maintain a regular schedule with the Coliseum and not just 2-3 games per year. Its really fun to go back in that rink from time to time despite commuting from Surrey

When I was listening earlier, there was a caller who spoke about his experience taking his wife to see a Langley Rivermen game and it being a great fan experience. Sekeres was all about it being a great move by the Giants but didn't really want to talk about the impact to the LRM team.

It is just interesting, hearing the different media spin. Different treatment to different organizations and sports.

I enjoy hearing callers that call the radio personalities on their inconsistencies.

I wish the Giants all the best.

The lease and expenses passed on to the main tenant doesn't sound too attractive if they are stuck paying for repairs caused by raves or other events.

Vancouver or a surrounding municipality needs a 10k (+/- a couple k) seat venue.

I do think an AHL club could be a better draw than the Giants tho, especially when the Comets come to play.

If Vancouver did have a 7500 seat arena for the Comets I am sure it could sell out.

i disagree. i think the notion that vancouver is a "hockey town," is greatly exaggerated.

vancouver has enough money and fans to support 2 professional teams as long as they are winning and playing an exciting brand of hockey.

unfortunately, that is not likely nor is it smart to business plan that expectation.

the problem is that vancouver is too expensive when things aren't going optimally, which in professional sports (as in life) is to be expected.

Best case scenario is he is able to translate his abilities to the NHL like Matt Read, Erik Condra or Matt Calvert but I think it is more likely he ends up as a AHL/NHL tweener. Very few college FA make an impact in the NHL.

i understand your point but i don't think that a "successful" ahl franchise would generate all that much profit. certainly not enough to come close to mitigating the risk to the parent franchise.

in terms of putting an ahl in the city (metro van not necessarily van proper), i think that the extraneous benefits i.e. sharing facilities/services/personnel/prospect tracking etc are good enough for the canucks to do so (while eating the losses).

in terms of a strictly financial decision, i don't think it's viable especially if it's not a vancouver canucks' affiliate.

i don't necessarily disagree. the issue is going to be finding a sugar daddy who has a long term vision and can sustain the short term losses to build an arena and attract a jr/ahl team.

as would most of us on hockeybuzz. i'm not sure we're the representatives of the majority of "sports/hockey fans," around town. i just see the canucks as having 10-12k fans plus another 5-10K who will spend money for a fun night. those fans don't really care about the hockey but are there for the spectacle.

Remember when the top UFA NCAA prospects were Danny DeKeyser and Kellan Lain? Dekeysey has been a big part of the success in DET, so I think it is very much worth the risk.
