The NHL CBA is friggin' terrible. The formula for success is to have a core of 4-6 top earners, have 3-4 mid-salary guys who are loyal to your franchise, and then hope you can find lightning in a bottle with the other 10-13 players.

If any of those bottom guys develop into top-6/top-4? Likely gone through free agency. The NHL's cap is the most punitive in terms of making a successful franchise lose developing players year after year. Hoping Bettman is gone for the next contract negotiations.

- phantasmo

I'm no fan of Bettman, but whether he's the Commissioner or not will not make a significant difference for the next contract negotiations. He's just the front man for the owners, and carries out their orders concerning labor tactics. In many ways, Bettman is the perfect guy for the job (from the owners' perspective), since he's so completely unlikable that fans focus their hatred on him and not on the knuckleheads who really are responsible for messing up this great sport -- the owners.

We may not like it but Bettman is getting the job he's been charged with done - above all else maintaining financial viability for the entire league (answering to all of the teams' ownership/management) which is comprised of a bunch of disparate teams in very different markets and with very different financial profiles, needs and agendas. Like you, I don't see him going anywhere, anytime soon.

I think JJ is over reacting. You have to remember how small the marig between losing and wining is. If the hawks and blues where to play a seven series again right now you wouldn't be surprised if the hawks won this time. What i'm trying to say is that Chicago has a really good team and they will probably be the favorits to win next year.
I would not make any drastic chances. Trading Crawford this offseason is probably a BAD idea and when I hear Seabrooks name in the comment section I can't believe what I'm seeing. Seabrook was the hawks best defender this year and I would say he is worth about 7.5-8.5 million a year. The player I was a little disappointed in this year was Toews. He can do better offensively and a little offseason brake and motivation here will probably make for a good next season.

Let's remove the RFA's and shorten the list, as chances are that the ones we've heard of probably won't be available, and the ones we haven't heard of probably are not worth their weight in salt.

That leaves:

Cam Ward CAR UFA 32 G 52 23 2.41 0.909 $6,300,000 Too expensive.

Karri Ramo CGY UFA 29 G 37 1 1 17 2.63 0.909 $3,800,000 Probably too expensive.

Will be interesting to see what Detroit does with Mrazek. He had a pretty good year with a suspect defense group in front of him. With all that salary committed to Jimmy Howard, what do the Wings do??

From the conversations I've heard on NHL radio, it sounds like Detroit will try to move Howard at the draft.

I think Jason Demers on the top end and Eric Gryba on the bottom end. Only looked at UFAs. But those are the two I think might work.

If that is the case, then Stan has to get out in front with CC (although I would hate to lose him). He needs to see what the market brings.

Not that I disagree with the part in bold, but how would you solve this summer's cap crisis? Someone, or a few someones are going to have to go to make room.

Agreed...IF the plan is to trade Crawford.

We'll see if that changes. Given the Leddy and Sharp trades over the last couple of summers, you would hope Bowman would learn to get out in front of this.

Niklas Backstrom CGY UFA 38 G 4 2 3.35 0.881 $3,416,667 Nothing left in the tank.

James Reimer SJS UFA 28 G 40 17 2.31 0.922 $2,300,000 Probably too expensive.

Anton Khudobin ANA UFA 30 G 9 3 2.7 0.909 $2,250,000 Supposedly signed to play in the KHL.

...and realistically, maybe these guys:

Ben Scrivens MTL UFA 29 G 15 5 3.07 0.906 $1,747,500
Alex Stalock TOR UFA 28 G 13 1 1 3 2.94 0.884 $1,600,000
Chad Johnson BUF UFA 29 G 45 2 2 22 2.36 0.92 $1,300,000
Jhonas Enroth LAK UFA 27 G 16 7 2.17 0.922 $1,250,000
Al Montoya FLA UFA 31 G 25 12 2.18 0.919 $1,050,000
Justin Peters WAS UFA 29 G $950,000

From the conversations I've heard on NHL radio, it sounds like Detroit will try to move Howard at the draft.
- EKB13

Did not catch any Wings' games with Howard in net, but maybe if Detroit retains 50% of Howard's cap hit a tandem of Darling+Howard might be an option. Bickell+prospect for Howard at 50% retained by DET?

Again, people can disagree with me on the notion of trading Crawford this summer, but a big cap hit will HAVE to be moved next summer. My logic is to try and get a decent return for Crow now, rather than get taken to the woodshed again next summer when Stan has zero leverage...like we've seen with almost every Cap-Dump trade since 2010. ONE exception is Saad. The rest (Buff, Ladd, Campbell, Frolik, Leddy, Sharp, ect)....trash in return. Need to get back some assets for this next Cap-Dump.

I think trading Crawford would be a huge mistake, but I won't argue that it's not a possibility. Replacing a goalie through the free agent market would be tough, I would rather go with Darling as the #1 over any of those guys.

I wouldn't want Howard at 50%, the guy is really bad.

I know this is a very risky move, but look at the alternative Darth. Next summer one ofCrow/Panarin/Hossa/Seabs/Anisimov are gone, and likely for almost nothing ( with the exception of Panarin who is an RFA and could get a Saad-like return). However, there are ZERO in-house replacements for 72, 81, 15, or 7. Darling has all the physical tools to be a #1 in the NHL, and he is dirt cheap. Get ahead of the Cap or let it continue to weaken the Hawks roster, year after year.

Polak and Gilbert some toughness and a little bit of offence and only if we can get dirt cheap
