I was not one of those pining for him to stay but, in all fairness, he has been nothing short of exceptional for Tampa since they acquired him. It's fair to say that, up until now, the Rangers made a terrible decision in letting him walk and held onto Staal instead.

The rangers have made a few moves that have turned out to be terrible in hindsight as of late.

After a few wins with deals such as Gomez for McDonagh, Gaborik for Brassard, the Nash trade, MDZ for Klein, and the Pouliot free agent signing for examples, the Rangers are on a bit of a losing streak. The MSL deal, Yandle deal, E. Staal deal, Glass signing, Boyle signing, decision to let Stralman walk all come to mind as recent moves that have blown up in our face. Maybe letting Hagelin go can be considered one too although we'll have to wait and see how Gropp turns out.

Regardless, the Rangers were catapulted to contention through various savvy trades and are now crippled due to a streak of terrible ones.

Which means it's almost guaranteed he's signing with the Leafs.

Calling that one a draw. W/o MSL Rangers don't win the EC in 2014.

Maybe not. It also got us out of that Cally contract, but two 1sts was such a steep price.

The Raanta trade, albeit minor, was a pretty shrewd one. I am holding out for Gropp, and I think he has good top six upside, so I won't deem the Hagelin trade a fail either. The Hellberg deal could be a positive as well. But since the MSL deal the Rangers have not been on the favorable side of the transaction ledger. This is what happens when teams attempt to win at all cost.

The team is not as much a sinking ship as many believe.

The team's core of forwards at the moment, not including Buchnevich and aside from the likely to be dealt Nash, are all in their early-late 20s. Hank might not be the unanimous best in the world anymore but he is still a top five goaltender. The anchor has become their defense and it was a rapid descent.

These things can turn around as quickly as they declined as long as the organization, from player management to the coaching staff, are on the same page.

When you look at the core and ages, the future doesn't seem so bleak on paper.

But the fact is that sometimes, cores become stale. Doesn't matter how old or young players in it are.
