If you think Stamkos will be a waste of cap space then you'll never be happy with who they spend on. Unless you think they'll get Jamie Benn and Drew Doughty for a combined 7 million total.

It's one thing to have cap space it's another thing to spend it wisely. Saving cap space to avoid Stamkos doesn't mean you're going to spend that cap space any more wisely.

I really don't understand people's skepticism regarding Stamkos. Get him for an avg of 9M for 7 years... higher in the first couple and then slowly declining. When was the last opportunity to grab an elite talent at his age in Free Agency?

I agree with "don't go completely crazy" paying him - giving the already OVER DESCRIBED risks ...

at very least we have to keep the conversation going ... just to ensure certain bloggers from south of the border keep the level of insanity at reasonably high levels - the entertainment factor is just too high to be ignored

If we are going to "overspend" on a UFA, doing it on the second best scorer in the NHL who is just 26yrs old is the best way to do it.
Stamkos / Matthews is a vicious top 2C.

if the leafs get 2010-2013 stamkos i'm all-in. i don't know why is production is down or if it'll get worse though. maybe he'll be great again, it's possible. you're banking on him returning to form if you sign him for 7 years since he hasn't earned $10M+ with his play the last couple years.

1) was Kadri signed to a team friendly deal?? if so - by what GM?
2) what Rielly signed to a team friendly deal?? if so - by what GM?
3) which GM signed the horrendous Clarkson contract? Phaneuf overpayment? Kessel Overpayment?
4) what leads you to believe that Uncle Lou would set the Leafs up for a bad contract situation?
5) what are the three differentiating or absolutely unique factors about the Leafs organization relative to other teams in the league
i) players hometown and he knows what being a star with the Leafs means in Toronto (no other city can replicate that for him)
ii) Leafs coach is also the coach of the Olympic team (no other team can provide Stamkos a season long opportunity to bond with the coach)
iii) single biggest hockey market on the planet by a LONG SHOT, more endorsement and exposure than anywhere else (who thinks Stamkos pays for a drink, meal, car or anything going forward)?

anyone think for one minute that Lou doesn't play the Olympic coach card? anyone think for one minute Lou doesn't know about Stamkos' injuries?
