It won't be til around the end of any Stamkos contract that we might have any cap crunch and that gives management lots of time to figure things out. Not signing Stamkos now because we might have a possible cap crunch in 6-7 years is just silly. Who really knows what will happen in the intervening years? Players of his calibre do not reach free agency often.

Had a great Saturday. Got invited to an nhl 16 tourney by a co worker so me and my buddy showed up on our respective leafs and red wings jerseys with our own controllers to a party where we vaguely knew one person, began destroying every team until we forced them to turn the TV over long enough to catch the top 3 picks announced then went on to win the tourney, take their money and inform them we would not being joining their pub crawl or "getting the first round".

Edit: that co-worker happened to be my manager and I now have to work Saturdays.

Only been there in winter once for a wedding. Never seen the fireworks. Occasionally go skiing at Elkwater on the Alberta side.

After the next two seasons the Leafs will have just over $25M in cap space freed up from players who won't be part of our future. That doesn't include any further increases in the salary cap.

Pretty solid I'd say.

Especially since that number already accounts for giving Stamkos 10.5M a year.

understandable, but i don't think that's what they are saying. they are saying stamkos won't ave any interest in coming now.

i do understand the cap implications, but i don't think it will be as much of an issue as people think it will be. the cap will continue to rise, and we need to focus more of our efforts into not paying 3rd and 4th liners like they are 1st or 2nd liners. you look at chicago and their 3rd and 4th liners are making around 2 million or less a year. look at toronto, and we have guys making 4 to 5 million playing on our 3rd and 4th lines. once their contracts end and get replaced with cheaper options, we can afford to play our top 6 like top 6 guys.

You're exactly right on both points.

Now that the Leafs have a huge amount of very real prospects they are able to lose the high paid 3/4 liners and replace them with ELCs and other small contract players.

Leafs couldn't do that before because there were no prospects and they had to overpay to get UFAs or just to get their own players under contract to stay on a losing team.
