I don't mind it.

They are in a different spot then the Eagles. When the cowboys had a great running game it limited Romo and kept the defense off the field and controlled the game more.

They drafted for the now with Elliot and the future with Smith.

What about the "now" defense?

they also had a good running game when romo could throw a pass...the two work in tandem, and its not unique to the cowboys
- YuenglingJagr

They do.

they are trying to bring back what was successful with Murray in 2014.

Pound the ball and let Romo make a couple of plays. But not have Romo throw the ball 30-40 times.

They took defenders later in the draft.

They are also banking on controlling the game better with running the ball to limit the defense being on the field.

I think Cedric Thronton will have a surprising season. Also Byron Jones isn't a rookie.

There are a number of pros and cons to keeping hartnell or not. the cons far outweighed the pros, regardless of his production. the argument about his production is irrelevant if you look at the bigger picture, something this organization has said time and time again is all they are focusing on. so why not do that when thinking of hartnell. he was not a part of the future at all. his minutes could be given to other younger, more relevant players who would be a part of the future. the points hartnell would put up over umberger is irrelevant, this trade was not about that. it was getting rid of pieces that meant nothing in the big picture, im curious as to why people cant see that. sure, the trade sucked for us from a production standpoint, and that is an argument u can make if we were competing each year for a Stanley cup. but we weren't, so why does it matter.

now, we can buy RJ out and add more cap space to sign extensions, give raises, go after better suited players in FA, instead of having 4.75 million tied up for another 3 years to a player that will not be part of this future. its really as simple as that, that's why the trade was necessary regardless if Umberger scored zero goals, production had zero to do with it. it had to do with cap space, bringing up younger players, and making a nucleus that will lead us to the playoffs and be a perennial cup contender. the difference between us being a cup contender or not, had nothing to do with Hartnell either, another point that this deal was great and necessary for us in terms of long term planning and strategy.

Never said I would have kept Hartnell. I just don't believe getting Umberger was the best they could have done. Why not buy down his contract to $3.5M and get a legit asset back that could help the future? Is there no one who would have parted with a pair of 2nd rounders to take on Hartnell at $3.5M for 5 years?

No matter what anyone says, I will never believe that the best offer they could have gotten was Hartnell for Umberger and a 4th.

Wrt fat guys falling over each other

If Sam Bradford plays all 16 games, they are likely a 7-9 team, maybe 8-8 at best.

If that other dude plays, they're likely 6-10 or 5-11.

It doesn't make a damn difference since they don't have a first next year, so might as well get rid of Bradford.

- jmatchett383

what also sucks about this, is that not only is the draft in philly, and in addition of not having a 1st, if we suck again this year, that pick could be a potential top 5 pick which we then lose. not gonna be a fun year this year i imagine

If that happened then they would have not been able to make the move to trade Schenn and Lecavalier.

Everything has a ripple effect.

Lupul had a reputation for being very rude to the ladies as well.

The story I've heard (3rd hand) was that he and Richards were partying and each had a lady-friend for the night. Richards and his girl went upstairs, so Lupul asked if his girl wanted to follow suit. When she said no, he pulled out the "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?" line that has worked for no one ever in history.

Pat Burrell, on the other hand, is a man who knows how to get poop done.

Thronton is a solid run stopper, but nothing special. I like Jones, but we'll see.

Romo is going to get hurt again. He's being held together with duct tape. The Cowboys offensive line has also been remarkably healthy the last two years. They're such a fragile team. Redskins are the best team in the division IMO. By a pretty decent margin too.

I don't care what that pick ends up being, because it's no longer theirs. It likely will be a bottom-half pick, but it could, hypothetically, end up being the last pick in the first round. It sucks that they don't have one at all, but where it lands is immaterial at this point.

At face value the trade is the lone black spot on Hexy's wonderful record so far. But even that trade is no disaster and will end up helping the team long term. I do agree the return was rather underwhelming. Of course maybe Hartnell torpedoed a better trade bc of his ntc. Idk. But if we had Hartnell we would 100% not have been in position to draft Provorov or Konecny. Chaos theory at work.

But if we had torn the team apart after 12/13, we'd possibly have Ekblad/McDavid/Eichel by that same rationale.

They had a down year last year. They were 12-4 the year before.

I think Elliot was the choice to try and keep Romo healthy. Can run the ball more. Elliot can block and catch the ball.

I know the injury history for Romo. But if they keep him healthy they can contend for the division.

It is.

But if they did trade hartnell and kept salary we would just be complaining today about trading Vinny and trying to keep salary to make it work.
