I think winning the lottery changes the dynamics around signing Stamkos. TO has a lot of holes. The key is whether they think they can close enough of them by signing Stamkos and them trading a couple of young forwards. I think they may be better served exercising a little patience and building through the draft vs. signing Stamkos.

Yeah true... I think Umberger will be bought out. He literally fell off a cliff overnight. Was totally shot from the second he got to Philly.
- PLindbergh31

The trade was never going to be a win production-wise, but I don't think anyone expected Umberger to be as bad as he was. Maybe not a 20-goal scorer, but a 10-goal guy who could play bottom-6 minutes and be a PK contributor.

I didn't think so either.

I think he would prefer a place close to contending. Not wasting his prime during a full rebuild.

What about Tampa Bay? They went to the Finals last year and have done pretty well these playoff so far without Stamkos in their lineup. If they were able to get him, maybe he puts them over the top.

Of course. They never tell you what causes these lower body issues.

If he stays in tampa there is no way he is getting 10+.

They have to resign guys like:
Killorn
Brown
Namestnikov
Kucherov
Nesterov

And then Next season:
Drouin
Johnson
Palat

I mean they could but I don't know how they fit it.

Kucherov is cashing in with his playoffs this year.

You don't think Hexy would ever admit to that in one of his injury update press conferences do you? "Yeah, Umberger's D2D with a LBI from falling off a cliff."

I mean.. that opens up a whole can of worms the team doesnt want to get into... where was the cliff Umby fell off of? How high was the cliff? Does it concern you, as a GM that other players might find said cliff and tumble off of it as well?

So yeah...

Obviously he's not. But if he stays in Tampa, he spends his prime on a contender. Plus, add in the money he saves by staying in Florida and it's almost like he's getting paid $10M by Toronto.

Has the DOPS determined whether or not have an in-person hearing with the cliff?

Well, it *was* a Flyer who went off the cliff, sooooo... I believe that as far as the league and the DOPS is concerned, said cliff is still in good standing for the Lady Bying.

Oh I know.

I could see Buffalo trying to make a big play for him.

And against what people tell me I could see the Flyers making a play.

I did see something the other day, not sure where, just a snipet but it was a trade offer.

would you do:

To Tampa - Giroux

To Philadelphia - Kucherov, Drouin and 2nd rounder.

I think those were the parameters.

I don't get Bill's comment:
'The trade to bring Umberger back was widely panned even before he skated his first shift back with Philadelphia, following a subpar and injury-marred 2013-14 season with the Blue Jackets.'

The second trade, I remember most posters here supporting the trade and being told I was WRONG when I said, only a Philly fan could possibly see this as a good trade. This trade had nothing to do with RJ. It had everything to do with not getting value for Hartnel. I said it then, and I'll say it now, at the time, the trade was 75 cents on the dollar. And I agree with the poster saying it was a conditioning/partying issues. I don't know exactly why, and we may never know, but it was certainly a push then a pull trade which put Philly in a position of weakness and meant we were going to get low value.

I would not do that deal because you need a 1C. Now, if you can sign Stamkos and then do that trade, then yes. But I'd need a top-line C (with NHL experience) if I am going to make that trade.

Right. You usually get injured when you fall off a cliff. Just look at the singer of Rush. Why do you think she looks like a man?

The biggest problem I have with the Hartnell for Umberger trade is the fact that Umberger was a legitimate buyout contender for the Blue Jackets. He would have been bought out. We traded Hartnell for him, and Hartnell has gone on to score 51 goals and 109 points.

Our biggest need? Top six left wing with size.

I get that there are cap implications, but still think it was a terrible trade then and now.

- jak521

This isnt why the trade was made at all, people seem to miss the point. we didnt WANT umberger, so the fact that he wouldve been bought out is irrelevant to this trade. if umberger wasnt bought out, we wouldnt have even traded hartsy. the only way this deal worked is if we traded one bad contract for another. hartnell had no future here and we certainly would not have won a cup just because of hartnell.

this trade was done for one reason, realizing that at the end of the day, who's cap hit would come off the books first. umberger came off two years earlier. at the time of the trade, of course the talent we gave up was more than we were getting back, but it had little to nothing to do with that. now two years later, we only have to deal with one year of umberger instead of 3 for hartnell, having now more cap room to sign UFA/RFA and having room to move around the cap.
