It would be really nice if there was a clear cut #1 Defence man in this draft. - thundachunk
If there was a clear number 1. Edmonton would be all over that at 4. |

If you don't win, you lose. Canucks "went" from 3 to five. Loss.
Looking back at past five to 7s, not many to get a excited about. Solid players, but not guys who are going to be able to speed up a re-build. |

Wondering if the Oilers will pick a dman and we end up with Tkachuk or will they trade their pick for a later one and go after a dman?
A top 3 pick would have been nice but I think we will still end up with a pretty good player, just one that might need a little more developing. - hillbillydeluxe
That's my guess.
Can't see how the oilers take another winger.
Either way I'd say it's between
Tkatchuk
That Dubois guy
Chychrun
Juilioevi
Sergachev
I think Edmonton takes juilioevi and we grab tkachuk. |

I'm glad I don't have to do the picking and just get to b!tch about the results.
We really need scoring and dmen, just now sure what the ceiling is on any of the top dmen available... if they don't project to be top pairing, I'd rather we go after a forward that is projected top 6 and will provide offense.

Probably going to get killed for this but i see the 4th going to Montreal in a package for Subban - fiveandagame
Now that's an interesting morsel to chew on.
Chance of happening. .5% but fun to think about.
Subban for Dubois (4th), Burrows, McCann and Sbisa??
future D pairings look like what?
Edler Tanev
Subban Subban
Tryamkin Hutton
Pedan
edit: Ha. obviously misread or refused to believe that we didn't get 4th. |

Didn't the odds have us picking 5th all along?
Don't we usually talk about Top5 when discussing the draft?
We'll get a good player.

You guys need help on the back end.
Someone to pair with Nurse going forward.
i think it'd be hard to pass on Juiolevi. |

I could see them trading the pick for a young established dman. |

If Chiarelli trades Hall for a dman you can bet it's either Tkachuk or Dubois to try and replace him on that left side. |

With the way last yr's 1st rounder (Barzal) went for Reinhart. I only hope they actually trade it for an "established dman" and not worry about the "young" part |

Ya I was thinking someone who's already got three full seasons or more under his belt. Definitely not an unproven (at the pro level) prospect like Reinhart. |

He's both C/LW so he gives versatility, he brings a size we can use down the road, and we're already moving one or two of Hall, Nuge, and Eberle (likely the latter two) for D help so I think we'll be fine in that regard. We've got Klefbom and Sekera to help shelter Nurse and then whichever two Dmen we acquire this offseason. My main point being, we need Dmen NOW not three years down the road and we're already planning on moving forwards for those D so why not restock the system with an elite talent to replace what we're going to lose? |

Hamonic, Vatanen, Shattenkirk, Trouba, or Brodin through trade and Demers or Goligoski through UFA. If we get any two of those using a combination of Eberle, RNH, the 1st this year, and the 1st next year, the team looks well off. |

Sure if they can sign a UFA defenceman, otherwise it creates a huge hole in your top four. |

Also no disrespect, but is that a real question? We've had 7 straight lottery picks and been out of the playoffs for 10 years. Things need to improve now before important players start asking for trades. We got gifted McDavid last year so we need to finish this rebuild and get to competing. I figured it'd be obvious that the Oil need to be pushing hard for improvement in the present. |

I edited my question to provide a bit more context, but yeah. real question.
The team will improve with another decent pick, i don't see the rush in trading up for a good Dman that will be closer to UFA, when the Oil are not near contending.
why not trade RNH or Yak for some help on D and keep the pick? |

Here are some scouting reports:
A top-end talent that impacts all aspects of the game from different angles. May well be the most complete player in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. His multidimensional play and elite offensive prowess reminds scouts a little bit of James Neal. Competitiveness marks his game and he consistently proves to be a high impact player when he is on the ice.
Steve Kournianos, The Draft Analyst: Dubois profiles as a high-end power forward with the ability to succeed at either center or wing. A skillful tower of strength in the mold of Jamie Benn or Patrick Marleau, Dubois is a mature specimen who combines God-given physical talents with a sort of sixth sense rarely seen in a teenage prospect. He’s tough to play against on or off the puck, and uses a wide stance and long wingspan to keep the puck nestled within an impregnable zone of protection. Dubois has a long stride and reaches top speed quickly for a forward already above 200 pounds before his 18th birthday. He is a tough out in one-on-one situations, and changes gears fast enough to leave the smartest of positional defenders behind him. His pro shot and quick release are just part of a myriad of ways he can beat you. All that said, his hockey sense and ability to process plays in a nanosecond helps vault him to the upper tier of a very talented group of draft-eligible power forwards. Dubois, who plays center with aplomb, can be used in all situations regardless of how much time is on the clock, or what the scoreboard reads. He wins draws cleanly then positions himself properly immediately thereafter. Dubois does so many things exceptionally well, and playing with menace and snarl evokes memories of hockey’s heroic warriors of the 1960’s or 1970’s. A real leader with elite offensive skills and off-the-charts intangibles, Dubois comes across as the perfect specimen who we feel is less than a year away from the rigors of the NHL. Being a gym rat does have its drawbacks, however, as he seems to forget how strong he is. Dubois shows an occasional lack discipline and has to learn how to play within the rules. |

That's generally the plan. I don't see why the team can't compete for the playoffs next year if they bring in two RH top-4 Dmen (Hamonic & Vatanen, for example).
The fact of the matter is the team needs to make winning their primary goal and if they're moving Nuge now, they'll stand to gain from bringing in an elite offensive talent like Dubois to supplement the team a few years down the road when the cap starts to become a problem. There's benefits to both, but I prefer the choices for forwards available at 4 while at 32 and 62 there's a better selection of Dmen than forwards (Johansen, Dineen, Sambrook, etc). |
