Would you trade Umberger for Hartnell today given that Hartnell will be taking up one of the protected slots if there's an expansion draft in 2017 or 2018?

So Schenn gets 3 games for what looks like a regular hit.

Wilson gets a fine for a obvious kneeing which was dirty.

That's just mean. He's already missing legs, and now you wanna make him go deaf, too?

In regards to your post on the previous blog

The scarier thing is that Stolarz, who looks like a potential goalie of the future,w ill have to be protected as well. So if they decide to bail on one of Neuvirth/Mason before the expansion draft, they'll have to choose between that goalie and Stolarz being unprotected. If you hold onto both, then you protect Stolarz, leave Mason and Neuvirth unprotected, and hopefully resign the other one before UFA.

I dont think you leave Mason or Neuvirth unprotected...I think that guarantees one of them gets picked. There are better goalies further along in their development that an expansion team would likely choose over Stolarz

No. The entire plus side of that trade was getting out of the contract earlier. Why undo that?

Well, I read somewhere that if Hartnell was on the team we would make the playoffs.

Bill,

I am going to play devils advocate on the HOFers listed on the Alumni site. Should Joey Mullen, Doc Emrick or Jay Greensberg also be listed on there? They have all had associations with the Flyers and all are in the Hall.

Regardless, I am glad to see Stanley on the list, not well known as a Flyer but still a HOFer.

- Pyzik

Mullen, no. Inducted as a player, not as a "builder" (coaches included) and never played for the Flyers. If he's listed, Jacques Plante also needs to be listed.

Jay and Doc, I can see. Will take it up.

No because neither Hartnell or Umberger are going to be key components on this team in 2017 or 2018.

Rather see a prospect or a young player in those slots.

Stolarz, even if left unprotected, isn't getting selected unless he posts 30 shutouts in 60 games for the Phantoms next season. There will be a bunch of goalies with NHL pedigree available in the expansion draft.

An expansion team might take a flyer on a young forward or defenseman in the minors but I doubt they dip their toes in the AHL for a goalie.

Exactly...plus either way a team is deciding between Mason/Neuvirth or Stolarz. Unless they see him as a future #1 based off of pro scouting over several other goalie projects...I cannot at all see why Stolarz would get picked

Considering it would be in your best interest to buy both of them out then Umberger is the guy you want.

Doesn't negate that it was a bad trade at the time and continues to be a bad trade unless you pretend there are only two options, make the trade or don't make the trade.

I'll never stop believing there wasn't a better trade for Hartnell out there if there wasn't such a priority put on it at the time.

My thing is even this year there wasn't a market for Hartnell. Columbus wanted to move him. So I don't think it was a easy as people thought.

I have to admit to a bit of apprehension when I realized he would have to be exposed but about 10 minutes later reality kicked in.

Yes, but he was having a bad season and is 2 years older. Turn back the clock and the list of suitors may be different.

Buy-out RJ this summer.

Protect:
7 Forwards - Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, Schenn, Couturier, Cousins?, Raffl? Laughton? (can't decide on the final 2 forwards)

3 Defensemen - Gostisbehere, Del Zotto, Morin (2 years of pro experience includes AHL I assume?)

1 Goalie - Mason (pending how 2016-17 plays out with Mason vs Neuvirth)

Are we that weak at forwards that I had trouble picking 7 to protect? Streit, MacDonald, and Read's contracts would help towards hitting the 25% of the cap rule if that part is true.

He's two years older. I still think you could have easily moved him at the trade deadline in 2015 for a couple picks.

I think the picks would have been better than Umberger.

Ah yes, I forgot him. As of now I think I'd lean towards Cousins and Leier for those final 2 spots, but I guess a lot will depend on how Laughton looks next season. First and foremost, let's hope he's healthy.

It is a fun game to play but you really need to put it into context with the rest of the league.

I think this summer will be very interesting because of the expansion rules looming. A team like St Louis or Anaheim. Heck even Nashville. You can protect 3 defensemen so it makes me less worried about losing a guy like Gudas. Really all that matters is the best player or two that is unprotected. Yes you want to keep the best, but really the key is trying to make 1 guy you are willing to get picked look attractive league-wide

I think Laughton absolutely must be there. I don't think we've seen his full potential yet. Kid plays hard, has speed and size, definitely some offensive swag. would love to see him on a line with some muckers and playmakers. like a laughton - gagner - raffl line, or even laughton - cousins - voracek to split up the top line.

always wanted see Laughton on G's left wing and see how he did on that line.
