As we discussed yesterday, playing progression is linear. McIlrath's game improved 200% year over year, therefore he will improve 200% each year for the next 8 years.

He will likely be the NHL's first defenseman to score 400 points.

As much of a pain in the ass as this cap stuff is, it does add parity to the league...outside of the poopshow that is the Oilers front office.

...and the Snow/Wang era...that was quality entertainment.

They can't be forced to protect Marc Staal and leave someone better exposed IMO

You know what, reading that, it seems teams can ask players to waive NMCs before the draft. No one is taking Staal or Clowe Or Girardi, so I think some teams would be in the clear. They only use the term "involuntary relocation"

the rules seem to be if a player has a NMC the team is required to protect them in the expansion draft, you only get a limited number of players to protect

so, the Rangers could be in a position where they have to protect Dan Girardi and Marc Staal while leaving a significant player exposed because they run out of protected slots

If the Rangers took the option where you protect 7F, 3D, and 1G...they'd have to burn two protected defenseman slots on 5/18. You'd have to figure the other would be used on McDonagh...leaving Skjei, McIlrath and Klein exposed.

They could go the 8 skaters and 1 goalie route too. Regardless, if I'm Gorton I'd be begging Dolan for permission to buy out Girardi and begging Staal to accept a trade to one of his brother's teams.

the weird thing is that Girardi turns into a NTC on July 1st, 2017, so another factor is exactly when an expansion draft would be held, would it be before the draft? after July 1?
