Like having 3rd liners play on the 2nd line, it's always been a problem here.
Man it would be nice to get a top pairing Dman in this draft if we don't pick top 3. - golfingsince
it's the organization's white whale.
if they can get a solid 1st pairing Dman (even if he's not a true #1), it would stabilize the d unit as a whole. a 25 minute guy will make the rest of the d look "underrated." |

Or a coach who could turn 3rd pairing d-men into Lidstrom and Orr. |

I agree. I also believe finding and developing a true #1 could turn the blueline into a position of strength rather quickly. |

My guess is we're going to pick 5th overall, and we'll take Dubois. JB will start looking for defensemen in the second round and onwards. We need big forwards that can score just as much as mobile offensive minded defense. |

If we keep grabbing forwards in the 1st round at some point we'll begin to look like the Oilers. |

drafting based on need seems great in theory but dangerous as fcuk when dealing with top 10 picks who could be franchise building blocks. |

It's not like picking a D over somebody who's considered a much better prospect. The three D are rated 7,8,9. |

The only team that won anything picked Seabrook in the 1st.
Also, LA. |

so all in all, you are hoping we draft a D-men if we select 4/5? |

I'm probably starting to sound like Dragon...but, we need scoring more than anything else. We desperately need players with first line potential. D can come from anywhere. See Larson, Stetcher, Tree etc |

as long as benning picks the best guy in the long run, i'll be happy. otherwise, i'm going to pick every guy picked after us and say, "gee, why the eff didn't benning choose that guy???!?!?!?"

Tkachuk would be intriguing....otherwise I'd like Chychrun even though I think Juolevi is a safer pick I think the big kid has the most potential to be a #1. |

The top forwards are all considered a step ahead of the top D prospects. Dmen tend to take longer to develop and are harder to identify who will be a difference maker early in their careers. Keith, Weber, Chara are 2nd round picks. It's safer to take the know quality 1st round, pick up the greater variance picks in later rounds. |

I think need should play a role, we need a dman but if a forward is available that is so much better, more of an impact player, higher ceiling, yada yada. you have to go with the forward. Top line centre would be great, but a sniper who plays the wing can have just as big an impact. I'd wonder if a dman moved up into the top 6 is if it is because of need or if the dman impressed in interviews or if the club always had the dman ranked higher?
With all the rankings from different sources/people made public, it is interesting when see deviations from consistent rankings. Lots of pressure to make the right pick after tanking for a year and see if the silver lining turns out to be a franchise building block or a big log. |

Remember when Benning drafted Boeser, and the player comparable on the sportsnet broadcast said "Top 6 forward" and no one knew ANYTHING about him. I think we just need to trust his scouting skills. Whatever the Canucks choose, we cannot criticize until we have seen the player play 2/3 years as a NHL regular. |

it is hard not to do this when you watch the draft and the commentators will be saying for the picks after, stuff like, "we are surprised this kid fell this far", "who would have guessed this kid would be available at this pick"?
playing the long game if these guys need some developing so an even longer game with dmen.
top 3 could help now. |

Subtle circle-back to the sombrero references. Nicely done. |
