Well he and Kopitar out scored their opposition by 4 to 1.78 per 60 minutes in 270 minutes together so I can see why those articles exist, but he played more with Carter. He actually boosted Carter's numbers quite notably (both possession and standard).

I have my own blind spots (value of Klefbom being one), but I just don't get why such the huge hangup on handedness. When most teams with available top-4 RHD seem to be lacking a LHD of similar level/potential (St Louis, Winnipeg) or specifically asked for a comparable Dman in return (NYI) doesn't it make sense that we'll likely need to replace the player they lose on the left side, too? Then we're only pushing one LHD to the right side and all of Davidson, Sekera, Klefbom have done it with some effectiveness at one point. I'm sure McDonagh has also done it.

The idea of Nurse developing beside Byfuglien, Myers, and Enstrom or Pietrangelo, Bouwmeester, and Parayko MUST be a mighty enticing thought and a solid way for us to maximize return on an asset who "might never turn out" (as some would say).

In the case that McDonagh is available (doubtful) then who on the market is a better Dman? Looking purely at level of the player, McDonagh stands above the rest of the rumored available. So if we have a chance to acquire him, I don't see why we don't happily pursue that and instead move one of our lesser LHD for a RHD (Nurse or Klefbom for a Hamonic or Trouba comes to mind). Not only do we upgrade our RD substantially, we also take a major step at LHD.

McDonagh (Nuge+1st)- Klefbom
Sekera- Hamonic (Nurse+3rd)
Davidson- Gryba
Reinhart in the AHL

Suddenly our D is no longer a weakness now or in the future and our forward corps STILL boasts McDavid, Eberle, Hall, Draisaitl, Pouliot, and Maroon. Acquire a guy like Berglund and then sign a Stempniak and lo-and-behold we're easily a competitive team.

I'd hardly call either massive overpays; somewhat overpaying for sure, but I'm sick of waiting for that perfect deal because chances are very high it'll never happen. What happens if he can't convince a team with that type of asset of a deal he doesn't deem an overpay and eventually misses out on every one of them? Then we go into next season with virtually the same D as this year (barring a UFA addition).

I think he's one of the best GM's in the game and really believe he will fix our D without giving up 2 grade A assets for 1. And I'm a big believer in playing on your proper side on defense.
