You write that those pieces are all superior to McDonagh and yet the Oilers are once again counting lottery balls. What gives? If all of those pieces were legitimately better than McDonagh, a slam-dunk top 10-20 defenseman in the NHL, then you'd think the Oilers could overcome their lack of depth elsewhere to at least crack 80 points.

With expansion right around the corner Chiarelli sh-- the bed trading for Reinhart. Giving up the 16th & 33rd picks in 2015 for a player that you might not protect in expansion doesn't make any sense to me. I hated that trade then & like it even less now. It wreaks of desperation. Swing & a miss. Snow fleeced Chiarelli & Edmonton is even more desperate now so if Edmonton trades for Hamonic I see them fleecing him again.

What I find odd is if Hamonic requested a trade last off season why didn't Edmonton make that deal happen then for Hamonic instead of Reinhart. It would have cost more than the picks alone but they were in discussions for a Dman!

That leads me to extrapolate that Chiarelli was clueless as to the state of this team. All this change. Nicholson replaces Lowe; how is he still involved with the Oilers, no person is more responsible for this mess than Kevin Lowe, Chiarelli in as GM, a new shinny coach in McLellan, McDavid & Edmonton finishes 29th overall.

Sure the future looks bright. Its looked bright for what is it now, year 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10 of the rebuild! I get confused very easily with math. Hell the NHL has changed the lottery rules not once but twice because Edmonton has picked to high to often & if they win again the will be changed again as the other 29 teams in the league are sick of it.

I'd have to guess that the expansion protection really didn't come into play. I'll go as far as saying it wasn't on anyone's radar at the time. Id say it's a stretch to call that a mistake.

Reinhart looked pretty brutal at times, but showed some signs of hope late in the season. He was assertive and using his size. Still pretty slow footed though. But Certainly not ready to call it on him yet. And I don't hate that we missed out on whatever smallish forward we gavevup. Imagine if he had done nothing and we drafted another forward? What would u be saying then ? Or another question mark prospect defender years away?
These are all just hindsight arguments.

I think pc gave up abit much, but we missed out on Hamilton and reinhart was probably the next best thing readily available. Plus, I don't think you were gonna get reinhart for WAY less. I can agree the high 2nd was too much, but maybe a 3rd or 4th was correct. Again, in hindsight.
But the first was non negotiable from snows perspective imo.

Chiarelli made some solid moves. A few missteps, but mostly pretty standard stuff. Not jumping off the wagon just yet
