With Mason and Neuvirth playing the last year of their contracts next season, would you think whomever plays the best next year they keep? Or is Mason the de facto #1? |
|
|
|
How many games is Chimera getting suspended for his boarding penalty in game 5? That was worse than what Schenn did. |

Whoever plays best but then that guy will get outplayed by the guy that goes henceforth... It can't be any other way. |

I think cost will be a major factor as well. They have Stolarz and several other young goalies who will be close to contributing. Doubt they want to go long term with either Mason or Neuvirth. |

They'll let them battle it out and then weigh that with contract demands. |

Absolutely. If they're both really pushing to be their best in a contract year, it can only be good for the team. |

Since I think next year's goal should be to win at least 1 playoff round, it's also nice to have a 1A/1B duo, which is what I think they have, in case one of them gets hurt/slumps. |

For sure. Giroux, Voracek, and Simmonds were all MIA. Not going to win without them producing. Amazing they pushed the series to a game 6. - PLindbergh31
Bringing up this point is very true, what happens if all our guns go into a slump all at the same time. i mean its a silver lining that we made it to a game 6 vs the top team in the league with our 3 big guys combining for only one goal. however, if were gonna be a perennial cup contender, its all well and good to have the blueline prospects we have, and of course more skilled defensemen (provy, sanheim, myers) will lead to inevitably more offense, but i think we eventually will need to go sign a bonafide scorer. we can draft now for it but the guy wont be ready for several years, and i feel like G is only getting older.
i know this is a pipe dream, but imagine a top 9 of:
Schenn - Giroux - Simmonds
Lucic - Backes - Voracek
Laughton - Couturier - Konecny
That's pretty much a lineup that would dominate in all facets of the game. |

If you actually have supporting pieces to take some of the coverage off then I dont see why it shouldnt be.
An apparently injured player with literally no support from anyone else is not a good enough indicator to me that he shouldnt be the first line center. |

What I am saying is that we should not be focusing on signing players in order to compete for a cup while Giroux is still in his prime...the way this plan works best is that we keep developing forwards and hope they all contribute at a high level, especially offensively towards the end of Girouxs prime. What sucks for Giroux might be best for the Flyers |

Personally I think Giroux is one of the best players to ever wear a flyers jersey, although i know some disagree for some reason, i feel like thats pretty obvious to most fans. I thought after that 2012 season he was going to take off, into the stratosphere that has scorers like Kane, Benn, Seguin, Crosby, etc. The lockout happened, the injury in Germany happened, then the golf injury, and hes only getting older so im not sure if thats possible anymore. But i still see him capable of 70-80 points a year, which is right under those guys, while still playing big minutes at ES and some on the PK. hes a top faceoff man and a guy everyone respects and will follow. adding guys that wont mortgage the future, but also that will add some missing components on our team, should only ease the transition further for the rookies to come up.
with 14 million already in cap space once all the retaining salary is gone, guys like Gagner are off the cap, and if they can find trade partners for Streit (doubtful) and read (hopeful), i think even with extensions kicking in a new contract for Schenn, we can add 1-2 solid guys. Backes helps in the physicality, leadership, and a 2C who can put in 55-60 points a season. Lucic helps with toughness as well, goal scoring ability, chippiness, and a nose for the net. After watching washington come in droves with Ovie and backstrom and kuznetsov and oshie and williams, and looking at not only the skill, but the size of these guys, they just dominate defensemen.
I dont know, its all wishful thinking at this point i guess. |

my 4th line would have been PEB - Cousins - Raffl. I obviously wouldnt mind stamkos, i mean thats obvious. but i think he will command 10+ mil per year, for 6-8 years. I think Backes at 32 and Lucic at 30 could each command 5-6 mil a year for less term. so getting two of those guys for lesser term i feel would help than one guy for much longer |

They are guys that developed together and then they added the FA pieces and supplementary pieces. It could happen but we have tried and failed at adding supplementary defensemen. Now with the prospects we have on defense...giving them time to mature both physically and as professionals, by that time is up we will have a bigger forward prospect pool and hope they peak at the same time.
Giroux and some of the other main pieces on the team now are good enough that the Flyers will be competitive and with goalie performances like we saw...there is always a chance. We are through the crap years now. There will be growing pains for some, but the worst parts of the retooling are over.
Those additions you said could look great for this next season and even a season or 2 after that, but when the meat of the prospects are up and beginning their primes, those contracts will start to look bad. It is not the ideal scenario
