It is. Love this kid. He's laid it out there all year and he's obviously played more games at this point than he's played in his entire life.

After the first (a bit turnover happy), I thought he settled in nicely. Had a solid game. Credit is due. Now, is he improving or just had a respectable game including a big hit on Tom Wilson, which is what people seem to be latching onto? Me thinks the latter. He is what he is: a decent enough 6/7. Not very good puck skills or instincts either offensively or defensively, but he plays effectively to the system and is aggressive in the NZ, as Hakstol prefers. And he competes hard. I still don't think he's more than a 6/7 or a tweener.

I'm gonna be that guy.

I want to see his #fancystats.

Manning's got moxy, but I'm just not sure he's much more than that.

He was an offensive-minded D-man and risk-taker in AHL: big hits, lots of fights, but prone to the big gaffe, too. Simplified game and it got him up here as a 6. If he tried to be an offensive D-man at this level, he wouldn't have stuck.

yep he showed up for sure.... he outplayed read by a mile

Read's going to find himself in the A if this keeps up next year. There will be plenty of guys willing to do his job for much cheaper

Think he can stay as a 5 or 6 or does he get lost in the shuffle of the new guys?

His contract this year almost felt like a lifetime achievement for being in the organization and doing well in the AHL.

He seems game, but....

He's a guy who is going to have to battle for a job every year. But, yes, I could see him sticking around as the 6 (or 6/7 swingman) for a couple years.

i'm an eye test troglodyte and i think he may have offensive potential with the right coaching

I mean he's going to be 26 in a few months...I'm not banking on miraculous puck skill development. By MY eye test he has two modes when he has the puck: dump it in with a clapper around the boards, or when in zone, just throw it on net with his head down. He simply doesn't know what to do with it. He gets panicky with it on his stick and has trouble making a read. That's poise and hockey sense. He has redeemable qualities as I mentioned, and I try to be fair to him, but I see low offensive potential. His puck skills are one rung up on Schultz to me.

He has seemed like "that guy" who was willing to do anything to stay. I also think playoff hockey might suit him better than regular season hockey, if that makes sense.
