I think he's played OK in this series as well. couple of dumb penalties, but that's easy for me to say. I don't have guys like Ovie, Chimera and Wilson lining me up all night to put me through the end boards. - landros 2
And the delay one was flukey.
I am not saying he is in his prime chelios but people act like he is Ryan Parent out there. |

Can you tell me where he is way over his head?
I must be the dumbest person ever because I see manning and Schultz followed by Gudas as the best dmen on the Flyers this series. - J35Bacher
I havent looked at fancy stats, but watching him play, especially down low, he struggles. Guys are cycling on him at will.. and offensively there isnt much to talk about. He doesnt move the puck well, isnt a great defensively, but he is pretty physical.. at least when it comes to pushing and shoving.
Just dont think he is making a positive impact. Its really hard to tell though.. especially because so much of the series has been special teams driven. |

All you worked out is that the OP intended to say 0.5%. Which means he meant to say there were only 100 douche-bagels in the entire arena. Even photo evidence shows that is still a woefully optimistic estimate and you all agree with that anyways. Still swimming down the river Denial about the rampant douchery among Philly sports fans..
I'd love to see them prove me wrong tonight but I suppose you think there will only be a maximum of 100 people cheering if a Caps player needs help getting off the ice because of an injury. - PlateSpinner
Baby boy, I was in the arena, it was likely about 150-200 people out of 19,500. It was embarrassing. But it is not something to taint everyone HERE. You however, seem rather representative of Pens fans, and not in a good way. And you're what we're dealing with here until your next post in this thread, which I will consider clear trolling. |

I just think it sends a bad message to him, going throughout the whole summer with the though of letting your team down and being yanked in an elimination game. i think it does better to show Hak has loyalty to mason even if he loses. one less thought on his mind after a rough series all around. - sjk540
get your argument but in the playoffs you go with what you think gives you the best chance to win....They need a shift in momentum...why not start Neuv?

Lets put it this way...
If this whole group of d-men return next year.. and Provorov makes the jump.. he sits.

Who cares?
Either he gets over it or he looks to find a new deal else where if he can't. Next season is a contract year for him and Neuvirth. - J35Bacher
I'd say that the coach cares, Mason cares, and likely the entire team cares. Loyalty and respect seem to have more value in hockey than other sports. If you want to punish your, arguably, best player for reasons outside of his control; then you are sending a message. What message are you sending?
"I know every player on our team has made mistake after mistake in this game, but I'm singling you out. If you don't like it, then go find a new team to play for. Of course, I mean that for next off-season, not this upcoming off-season. We still need you to be a good soldier for the upcoming season. Oh, and thanks for being the biggest factor for that late push down the stretch of the regular season. We really couldn't have done it without you. But yeah, now we're going to try and do it without you. OK team! Let's win this game! I totally have things under control" |

I understand why they are starting Neuvirth, but I'd play Mason
Either he's your starter or he isn't -- and one stretch of games against the best team in the sport, after he helps get you into the playoffs in the first place, shouldn't be enough to act like he's not your No. 1
Goaltending's a funny thing, and there aren't as many horses out there as anybody would like. But sometimes, guys give up soft ones you don't like, and sometimes, fluke bounces occur
Shouldn't be enough to erase three years of quality work, to me -- it's why we never have nice things at the goaltending position. Never stick with one guy when a small sample size isn't favorable - AllInForFlyers
Remember early in the year when he wasn't the number one and Neuvirth kept us in the hunt.
Both goalies have had a role in making it possible. Neuvirth had great games against Washington, Detroit, Chicago and other top teams to get us here too. I know he missed time. It happens. I am sure some adrenaline will kick in for him.

Why? Because it doesnt fix the problem. I hate the whole idea that a new goalie will give the team a spark. You are down 3-0 in a series, were embarrassed on your home ice on the night you were supposed to dedicate to the late owner of the franchise, and a goalie swap is going to "spark the team"?
BTW:
With out looking it up, can anyone tell me what Mason's save % is at EV strength this series?
OUR PK is killing us. Not our goalie. |

It was goofy for the fans to do it..... but as Bill said it was alcohol fueled stupidity of a few. Gotta love those who jump on the old soapbox and deliver a sermon condemning all 19,000. typical.

That's where I am -- they don't have to play Mason. But ignoring how you got there isn't what I would do

He had two very good months. October and November. He is a solid goalie. But unless he is curing the PK woes and scoring goals, he doesnt matter.

I think Neuvirth is the right choice for today. You have to make changes after a debacle like that.
Not that we are extending this series but more established goalies than Mason have been replaced in the playoffs after tough losses, and then gone back in once things have settled down, e.g. Crawford last year. He gave up 9 goals on 47 shots in the first two games against Nashville, and was replaced for games 3, 4 and 5. |

Again: That's why we never have nice things at the goaltending position. Mason got off to a little bit of a slower start, and now the narrative is that he wasn't the No. 1?
Was he the No. 1 when he outplayed Neuvirth over the last 3-plus months, then?
As a fanbase, we are never gonna learn. We are never gonna learn how to ignore small sample sizes for goaltenders |

so after the years and years and painstaking years we find to get a bonafide number 1, a playoff series that meant next to nothing that we reached only on the back of Mason who started 12 games in a row and was an absolute warrior, who started this year with apparently some bad personal issues, and is a part of the nucleus of this roster, you dont care about sending him a bad message, and dont care if he wants to go and find a new deal? you think neuvirth is the answer? a career backup, who had a really good year as one? its really unbelievable to me to even fathom people thinking Mason isnt the goaltender we need for the long haul |

He's definitely not the only problem in the series. But he hasn't played very well. I don't know if it would spark the team to be honest, but I also don't think it would hurt to try. That's why Hakstol get's the big bucks, to make these decisions.

Yeah. Sure.
in the world of free agency it has removed some of that loyalty thing.
Doesn't Hakstol have a loyalty to Neuvirth who kept the Flyers alive during Mason's issues and early in the season?
Hakstol is loyal to the Flyers. If he thinks tonight Neuvirth might do something then he plays him.
They are 0-3 right now. What's one big change the coach can make that might change game 4? Changing the goalie.
ANd if it doesn't work then tomorrow you can tell me your right, Mason's feelings are hurt and they still lost. |
