Come on, Scoob -- you know exactly what I mean

They were dead in the water if Mason hadn't been able to play and win those games down the stretch when Neuvirth was hurt

- AllInForFlyers

Right, but Neuvirth did a fantastic job when Mason struggled.

Not starting Mason isn't a slap to him.

Some posters here are part of that lazy narrative crowd when it comes to goalies.

I agree with your summary of the games. I also think he's somehow banged up because he just doesn't seem like himself.

Starting Neuvirth tonight is not in any way a slap to Mason, imho

"spine-chilling pregame tribute"

Yeah, I specially got chills with the: "Fvck The Pens!" part. Just...Chilling.

Damn, you'd think Bill was channeling his inner Coatesy with all the delusional homerism being flung around like bracelets in this story.

Yup, if it wasn't for some bad bounces, bad officiating and just plain bad luck, the Flyers would clearly have a 3-0 lead in this series. No doubt. The Caps are one fortunate team and don't know who they're messing with. Flyers just playing rope a dope is all. They'll win this in 7 just like they did against Bahstin!

Duh Duh Duh Duh Dada Duh Duh Duh Duh!

- NJPensfan

I'll give more explanation that you deserve, idiot.

1) You weren't in the building. Even people affiliated with other NHL organizations and the most stoic of press people were deeply moved by the pregame ceremony to honor Ed Snider. Seeing Lauren Hart get emotional for her rendition of "God Bless America" and knowing -- which you don't know -- the relationship between the Hart and Snider families, was also moving.

2) I owe a personal debt of gratitude to Mr. Snider that I will keep private.

3) Nowhere in today's blog does it say anything other than that Washngton leads 3-0 on merit. I don't appreciate words being put in my mouth. If you didn't read it, don't comment on it.

4) I have a personal zero tolerance policy for trolls. Disagreement is fine, as is being a supporter of a different NHL team. Trolling is not. Come around here again with your garbage and you will disappear from commenting anywhere on this site for a long, long time.

I dont think its a slap, but I know how fiercely competitive I am, and I would be pissed if I didnt get the chance to keep this teams season alive. Thats jsut me.

Why? Because it doesnt fix the problem. I hate the whole idea that a new goalie will give the team a spark. You are down 3-0 in a series, were embarrassed on your home ice on the night you were supposed to dedicate to the late owner of the franchise, and a goalie swap is going to "spark the team"?

BTW:

With out looking it up, can anyone tell me what Mason's save % is at EV strength this series?

OUR PK is killing us. Not our goalie.

- jak521

I don't have the #'s in front of me but I do remember reading that Neuvy's Save % short handed is much better than Mason's. If you can't fix the entire PK, maybe start w/the goalie. I think it's semantics @ this point, but we'll see...

Here is where I see the biggest problem...

Tonight is a lose-lose for Mason. If the Flyers lose, he got passed over for the backup in the final game of the year.

If they win, there is no way Haxstol can go back to Mason for game 5, and what does that do to Mason?

He has been fantastic for 3 years. Played his ass off in the Flyers last playoff series. And this is how he is repaid? I dont like. Not at all.

Re: goaltending

They've scored 2 goals in 3 games. Who they choose to start in net is irrelevant.

- BiggE

scoring is the real problem for sure. All the pressure is on Mason (or whoever is in net) knowing that they are getting zero goal support, so every save is huge.

Actually, no. The folks who could separate what was actually on Bryz vs. what wasn't were not the ones "shouting from the rooftops." That was the lazy narrative crowd.

Same with now. Game one, Mason was outstanding. Every bit as good as Holtby. Goal 2 in Game 2 was on Mason. Goal 4 of Game 2 wasn't unstoppable but Flyers already trailed by 2 late in 3rd period with Caps in total control of 3rd pd. Goal 2 of Game 3 was on Mason.

- bmeltzer

I would also say goal 3 of game 3 was on Mason. Not because of the crazy bounce or the shot but the fact that he, unfortunately, batted it perfectly to a streaking Kuznetsov. If he didn't touch it at all it goes into the far corner where the only person there was a Flyer.

The game winning goals in both games 2 and 3 were bad goals as you have mentioned. The Flyers can't afford any mental lapses by their goaltender tonight.

Thats exactly how I see it Bill.. And even sometimes you do have to give shooters credit. I still want/expect Mason to make that save on Ovenchicken, but that was a beauty of a snap shot. Low glove side with a wicked release. If anything (despite the guy driving down Masons right side, he was too far away to be a real threat) Mason needed to challenge AO more on that play.

I hope the Flyers win tonight. I really do. But I just think Mason should have been the guy to go.. win or lose.

- jak521

I totally get your opinion and there is def merit to it. Our lack of scoring has meant that there is no margin for error. If this sparks the team into scoring, so be it.

Not really, they are losing to a better team. Washington has ramped it up and, when down a man and missing your best penalty killer along with having no top pair D, this is going to be the result. The Flyers can hang with them 5 on 5 early, but as the game wears on, the Caps advantages of size, skill and depth will nearly always win out.

Any goalie that did anything other than what Mason did -- instinctively try to play it as it suddenly came into vision rather than, as any goalie would expect, going around the boards. Freak play. No more and no less.

There's more than that -- that's just what YouTube showed off a quick glance

My memory gets foggy as I get older, but didn't Niitty give one up from another county once?

- AllInForFlyers

Yeah, he was watching the scoreboard replay at the time of a center ice faceoff and got beat along the ice from the D side of center.

I remember that vividly and thought of it when we were all discussing the worst goals given up by Flyers tenders. To me the nity one might have been worse, but the timing of Mase's being in the playoffs trumps it sadly.

"I think it's a good time for a change for our team going into this game," coach Dave Hakstol said after the morning skate in Voorhees. "I believe Neuvy is the guy who can go in for us in this situation and do a great job."

Hakstol said his decision to use Neuvirth over Steve Mason was "not a negative to Mase. It's about winning Game 4. Pure and simple."

The only thing is he tracked it pretty well off the boards. Yes it was a bad bounce but I also feel it wasn't a terribly hard puck to catch. It was flukey
