On a somewhat related note, have you heard the remake of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car?
Oh My Goodness, it is franking horrible.
The original one was a slow, sad lament, but the tempo picked up to match the exhilaration of the speed of the car.
The new one? It's a poppy, synthetic piece of crap. It poops on the original one.

I'm talking lyrics, the epics songs of the seventies told a story. It's not about bands or their music. If you compare decades, it's pretty clear, songwriting in the 70's was damn good, Dylan, Lightfoot, Young, Simon, Taupin etc... On and on.
Gone through those decades, I can't think of lyricists that match those in the 70's. - LeafMan
Speaking of 70's music, did you know that "Stairway to Heaven" is public domain now? LZ was getting sued for stealing the melody from some other lesser known recording artist, so they dropped this bomb in court to avoid having to pay 10s of millions:

Everybody believes the music they listened to from age 15-20 or so is the best music in the history of the world. They'll have the same opinion when it comes to cast and writing of Saturday Night Live. |

It's not music I'm arguing, it's lyrics. Everyone has their own musical taste but you should be able to decipher thought provoking lyrics to a baby, baby, ohhh, ohhh ones. |

It has notes similar but not same sequence. Sooner or later most artists use phrases from others. The sheer volume of songs makes it probable. Today they just sample the music, get the rights to use it and call it their own brand. That's sad. |

Back then they just stole it:
“I think when Willie Dixon turned on the radio in Chicago twenty years after he wrote his blues, he thought, ‘That’s my song [Whole Lotta Love].’ … When we ripped it off, I said to Jimmy, ‘Hey, that’s not our song.’ And he said, ‘Shut up and keep walking.'”

The epic songs (lyrically) all came from the seventies, it's not even close. IMO.
Of course there songs in each decade, just not the volume like the 70's. No auto tune as well - LeafMan

Yeah, okay
You need to get done, done, done, done at work, come over
We just need to slow the motion
Don't give that away to no one
Long distance, I need you
When I see potential I just gotta see it through
If you had a twin, I would still choose you
I don't wanna rush into it, if it's too soon
But I know you need to get done, done, done, done
If you come over
Sorry if I'm way less friendly
I got niggas tryna end me, oh
I spilled all my emotions tonight, I’m sorry
Rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'
How many more shots until you're rollin'?

Because that's your favourite music most likely. Bias owns all in discussions like this. People didn't stop being creative or lose inspiration over time. What sells now (insert poop rap or pop artist) is watered down garbage compared to the average popular band in the 70s but there are still a lot of talented people out there. - daeth
This
Tool released a couple of albums between the mid-90's and mid-2000s that I think have some of the best lyrics ever written
Matt Good writes great lyrics, etc. There's been tons of great songwriters and lyricists.
Everybody is just going to prefer what they grew up on |

Most of it came from Dylan, Beatles and Stones, British Invasion. Although Eve of Destruction was the lyric anthem of the 60's, great tune as well. |
