Interesting, just read one about 3 players the Sabres should sign in free agency. They raised some of the obvious ones, but one I had not thought of was Lucic. I hate his guts, well hated. I don't hate anymore, just don't like his face...that smug look. Hard to say, but he might be a decent fit on our team.
- RhinoFan

Would love him. He probably did more for the sabres than anybody on that team. That hit got a broken core moved and a tired gm fired. Having said that, hes gonna cost too much for the 20-25 goals he will give you.

NO CANADA: HOW WE LOST OUR GAME
Pressure of playing in Canada can be too much for some
Part 1 of a six-part series

...in other words, there’s a reason why Steven Stamkos could end up choosing Tampa rather than Toronto if he enters free agency this summer. And if he does, he would not be alone.

According to agents and general managers, Canadian teams appear a lot more often than American teams on players’ no-trade lists. And when it comes to free agency, Canadian teams either lose out on the big fish or have to overpay.

The pressure on players in Canada is a well-worn excuse. It’s a cop-out that masks other factors — god-awful goaltending, mismanagement of the salary cap, an inability to draft and develop — that could help explain why no Canadian teams are in the playoffs this year and why it has been 23 years since the Stanley Cup did not need a passport to hold a championship parade.

But players, coaches, general managers and agents insist there’s some truth there.

“I have never had a player that hasn’t put the large majority of the teams on their no-trade list from Canada,” said player agent Ritch Winter, whose clients include Marian Hossa, Cody Hodgson and Ilya Bryzgalov. “The issue is that certain players — and there’s a growing number of them — like their privacy. I tell this to general managers all the time: You have to be better in Canada to be successful, because they have to have another reason to attract players.”

Great article regarding why many players choose not to play in Canada.

I can kinda understand the cap management issue, but the owner wants a cup and the gm wants a cup, the team wants a cup, the fans want a cup. When i weigh whats important, its always cup first, deal with the cap later.

I mean this in all sincerity and as a mostly non-drunk hockey fan. The folks who act like signing one man to our team guarantees that we will win championships are as childish as those who say Stamkos is not worth the price. It is neither; signing him guarantees nothing, he has won no Cups and we are still a young team on the rise. AND we would be stupid to not go after the man because he is supremely talented at the game of hockey. 36 goals is a lot but Christ on a pogo stick Stamkos did not lead his very talented and deep team to victory last year and there is a chance that signing one player to ridiculous money backfires and leaves us having to part with quality pieces in a couple years.

Annnnnnd THATS the cap management side of my argument.
Do we add 3 or 4 pieces and hope that as a team, we get that extra 12-15 points in the standings next year?
Or do we add one guy (or hopefully, 2) and hope they carry the load and get us those points themselves?
Basically, we don't know. So, Hockeybuzz is closed until further notice.
Everybody go home, nothing to see here…..

The Hawks pay big money and find ways, the Pens, the Kings just to name a few and they find ways to make it work and still win. The Sabres can do it also.

Watching all the games today that I DVRd...

Is there a defenseman in the league with a better point shot than Seabrook?
I can think of a few right up there...
But this guy seemingly always gets his shots through to the net, & if he doesn't score there's nice juicy rebounds.
There's definitely not another defenseman that scores big goals like him in the playoffs
And can play DEFENSE too for the 30min he's out there

I think he's actually underrated
Would vote for him for Norris over a guy like Karlsson for sure

Absolutely
And if we get as good as we all think/hope...
There will be Vets wanting to sign here on the cheap in a couple years to take a run at the Cup with us

I'm loving playoff hockey btw
Some really good games
(I'm DVR-ing them all)

Its Really REALLY a fine line though.
We got two monsters who are going to want to get paid in 2-3 years.
Risto now and ROR is locked up for a long time.
At some point, that all might pinch ya if you add Mr. Seven Letters.
And I'm not saying "don't do it" I'm just saying it might bite us in the ass.
But if thats the cost to win a cup, I'm all for it.
Better us than Toronto.

In order to win a Cup, you need...
1) high end talent
-obviously Stamkos adds to what we're developing, & currently would come in as our best player
2) young talent that can step up & fill roles (Cap reasons)
-that's where we need guys like Bailey, Fasching, Nelson, Guhle, etc. to work out & be effective bottom6 guys, that can potentially move up & still be useful when needed.

* we're a little thin on defense in this respect. Pysyk can prob move up into the top4, maybe Nelson at some point & the same with Guhle.
That's why it's important for us to trade for a partner for Risto IMO. That would keep McCabe on the 2nd pair & us in good shape overall.
* at forward, we're actually pretty deep. We don't have too many guys who project as top6, but hockey's future has us with 18 forward prospects with top9 potential. We only need a few of them to work out to be in good shape.

With all that in mind...
I think we're set up pretty good to use the Blackhawks mold of paying top$$$ for top talent, and filling in the bottom6 with cheaper guys that we eventually have to let go & bring in youth in their place

I like where this team is headed
Playoffs next year

Looks like we should get use to having an extra 3rd this year instead of a 2nd next year....
