I don't know, I mean he might be the best option out there.

Short of trading Sam Reinhart or winning the lottery, I don't see a team handing over the ideal partner for Risto.

I think you need 2 minute munching D men with offensive upsude. They don't have to play on the same pair. McCabe might end up with Risto long term

- sbroads24

I've been saying for years now that I thought McCabe would end up on the top pair w Risto

If Murray is thinking that too, then why not just play Gorges there till he's deemed ready?

Also... Just bc Yandle is the best that might be available doesn't mean we should go after him

We might have to wait till next season to get Risto a legit partner
Teams will be scrambling even more than usual bc of the expansion draft
Besides Anaheim (I'd MUCH rather trade for Fowler than sign Yandle btw), Nashville is pretty deep on defense too

yandle has decent speed, an upside
reality is the sabres would be better off signing soupy for a 1 year deal, in the big picture

Reasons I don't wanna sign Yandle...
-not the right type player for a partner for Risto
-length of contract especially, & $$$ per year
-age
-not good enough defensively to be a top pair guy
-I think McCabe can grow into exactly the type partner that would be ideal for Risto

missed 4 years, figure 250 points

total points in nhl then becomes 2137 total points and in the conversation for second best player ever

Didn't say he was bad, just not a "top pair" guy, and a bad for as a partner for Risto
I agree on 2nd pair, PP guy

But do we sign him to a 6/7 year deal & 6mil + per season?
IMO...
Way too long a deal bc of his age
And too much $$$ for a 2nd pair guy

I think Mario is definitely the 2nd best ever
But for 3rd best... ?
Those extra stats would def make a good argument for him to be in the convo

I'd prob say Messier & Orr are ahead of him though, maybe Lidstrom?

i know mock drafts have Jake Bean going 10-14 range I would not be opposed to selecting him 8th overall. 24 goals and 64 points in 68 games in the WHL which is usually behind the Q and the OHL in totals goals scored each year. I like his upside. That is if Chychryn and Juolevi are off the board when we pick

Wouldn't even mind A.Nylander if he falls to 8. Even though the need for a lefty D is there he can be another top 6 forward add and add another flame to the rivalry with the Leafs

I'm beginning to warm up to him, kid is very fluid out there.
Not sure about his defensive acumen.
Maybe this is what GMTM is looking for as a D-man PP-QB out there

he is more physical, big shot,

"Big tough mobile import defenseman playing in the OHL with a strong heavy point shot. A difficult player to beat one on one because he possesses a strong stride and excellent East-West lateral mobility. Relishes been able to get a big check in on opponents both along the boards and in open-ice. Has good vision and in transition makes good home run outlet passes. And although he on occasion will hold on to pucks a bit long, or get careless in his carries, he displays good passing skills. When you see a junior defender with this size ,mobility mixed with a dose of nasty, you have to think he goes off the board early no matter how much the pro game is evolving"
