They still should've gotten two minutes regardless of a fight. The ref giving Simmonds an additional two for roughing was totally and utterly baseless. One of the absolute worst calls I've seen this year.

Wilson boards a guy and instigates a fight. Where does that ref get off giving off setting penalties?

- hereticpride

This.

Refs blew this call.

I think the problem with the PP is its 5 years old and this is the first year we've seen teams put pressure on G and the point man instead of sitting back and protecting. And every team that is doing that against us is having success with it. They need to come up with a new look.

Yeah mickey mouse officiating on that. There were a bunch of calls that were missed as well in the 3rd I thought. Stuff that they were calling against the Flyers earlier in the game - that soft call on Streit, etc. Put the whistles away or call everything. Get your franking act together WWF NHL refs.

Brandon Manning must be a cat, he keeps getting into the lineup despite the fact of his fatal acts in too many games. Not that he would change the series alone.

Anyways, Jake's limp stick is the biggest issue IMHO.

I'd like to see them win at least one game for experience.

Also, as long as I'm gripping, I can't stand Richard's face anymore. I was originally rooting for WAS if the Flyers don't win the cup but Richards makes it hard to like that team for me. I guess I just need to get over it because ultimately I would like to see Ovi win one.

What fatal acts?

Because he was defending on the play and the puck went over the boards? That was an unlucky bounce.

Manning was the least of the problems if a problem at all.

Problems:
-1st PP is not generating enough pressure.
-Didn't get to the net enough or cause traffic 5v5
-Top guys weren't top guys last night. I thought Schenn busted his ass and played with an edge

This team lacks the talent depth that Washington has so they need their top guys to have good games to win. And then role players have to play above themselves to win this series.

As much as I like Simmonds it was foolish to engage him in that fight even if it was standing up for a teammate.

They were about to get a PP in a 1-0 game. The better answer would have been to score on the PP. Tie the game and then win it. That would have had more of an impact.

I know why Simmonds did it and I don't hate him for it but I thought it wasn't the right time.

A combined 8 shots on net for 2nd and 3rd period. Didn't even pose a threat to Caps D. Only real bright spot IMO was Mason

Understand.

Still thought it was foolish on Simmonds part.

What has a more lasting impact. Winning a fight against a 3rd liner or tying the game and pulling out a win in game one.

Wilson instigated it. When a guy that can throw bombs like that drops them you have to defend yourself. Simmonds could've ended up with a broken jaw had he waited for the refs to jump in.

Spend half the first period on the power play and don't threaten.

Then spend half the second and third periods killing penalties.

Jesus.

UPDATE: still pissed.

But hey- this is the playoffs. Strange things happen, and Hak adjusts well. Big game 2.

The game was certainly frustrating, especially the points you made here about the penalties.

Let's get a win for game 2 so the momentum carries over to home.

Even if the Flyers should have still received a PP (which is debatable) why would Simmonds fight Wilson and take himself off the ice for the PP when he knows they desperately need him out there? Down a goal, they are still right in the mix.

I love Simmonds, he's a very good player, and a great teammate, but sometimes he does some things that are really head scratchers.

This was going to be a really hard series to win under optimal conditions, with Couturier out I don't see any way they can win. They were pretty dreadful without him all year, now they have to beat the President Trophy winners 4 out of 6. Not happening.

The more I look at the roster, this team got to the playoffs with smoke and mirrors. (Which bodes well for when Hextall can add to the nucleus).
