You've got to think Hexy will sort out Umberger and Amac thereby creating some space for this. I don't see him signing a guy until he believes we're really in the window, and even then, it's prob a trade for a younger guy not a 30 plus vet. I think he will want to see what he has in Provy, Sanheim, Morin and Konecny before looking to fill holes.
- Hextall271

The timeline doesnt fit...he would have to add people before he can see what they do. Unless you just mean he will persue free agents if they dont pan out. History suggests he will fill the lineup and supplement with the youngins when necessary.

I.E. he will have a veteran ready to play if they dont make the roster out of camp

Best case is they move him this summer to a team like Buffalo that needs LHD and have a forward they don't need on a similar, but smaller contract.
- Feanor

I guess, but man, I just don't see anyone taking him with 4 years left at 5 million per.

But, ya never know.

Outside of Stamkos who will be way too expensive, none of the 2016 free agents really stand out as great adds to this team. I particularly don't want to pay market rates for Lucic.

http://www.generalfanager...Both&team=all&RFA=1&UFA=1

Ladd would be nice, but he's on the wrong side of 30.

- Feanor

Lucic would be a good add, but not at the money he's getting right now, and certainly not with a raise...

Loui Eriksson would be interesting. He's going to get paid big by someone though. At 30 I wouldn't want to give him more than a 3 year deal.
- PLindbergh31

He'd be a nice addition. He'd be a good fit for PP, whether it's PP1 or PP2. It's going to be an interesting offseason for the flyers and the NHL with the available FAs (Staal, Stamkos? Backes, Okposo, Boedker, Lucic to name a few). Not guys I'd go after right away, but I always enjoy players taking their talents elsewhere and how it impacts team + rest of the league.

If I'm the Flyers, I tell him that he will be bought out unless he agrees to waive his NMC. If he waives his NMC, then he still gets his $4.6M, but the Flyers don't need to protect him for expansion. This would be best for him, as he likely won't get an offer big enough to offset the difference in his buyout, if an offer at all. You let him run out the year and then it's done. If he won't waive, you either buy him out or offer him a mutual termination at $3M.

Hopefully he sees the writing on the wall and retires after the Flyers offer him a job in the organization so he's still earning some benjamins.
- wolfhounds

He can still play so he's not gonna retire and cost himself at least $3m from a buyout, or $4.5m if they Flyers keep him on the roster next season.

Stamkos is a pipe dream I believe. I don't think it's feasible to have Giroux, and Voracek at 8+, then spending another 10+ on Stamkos. The rest of the roster would be pretty thin with that much money allotted to 3 players.

Technically he can play, but if he isn't going to see the ice - which seems safe to assume - what does he do? No doubt, giving up the cash would be hard to do. Umberger isn't VLC as far as career/endorsement earnings.

You could do it. You'd have to sell low on some pieces to do it, but you could.

As crazy as it sounds, I don't think Stamkos is that good. I think like you said you'd have to weaken the teams in other areas. so adding him wouldn't necessarily improve the team.

The expansion rules really determine what Hextall should do with him.

If his NMC is going to force the Flyers to protect him in a June, 2017 expansion draft then you have to buy him out this summer.

If his NMC doesn't count because his contract is expiring, but his cap hit counts towards the 25% requirement then he's worth keeping on the roster.

Honestly, I think this team would be just as good if not better with Umberger on the 4th line and Laughton and Raffl taking VdV's PK minutes.
