Why wouldn't you want the first pick & then trade it in some manner for the second?
- kaptaan

Ive been suggesting that very thing for like 3 weeks. see my other post for that

Well said.

On the topic however these NCAA guys need to realize that they need to strike while the iron is hot as I mentioned a few threads ago. School will always be there…the NHL will not be. One strike and you could be out for some of these NCAA guys.

This is a great time for them to sign when they are HOT. Could have the win hangover next year and slow

I'd be surprised if McCann isn't traded this summer. Benning isn't sold on him in my opinion
- CanuckDon

Could he fetch sanhiem, hayden fleury or one of larsson or montour from the ducks in a deal or at least be the key piece? If so and you can sign stecher and draft a Dman in the 2nd round this year all of a sudden things are taking shape back there.

Maybe, although I'm not sure you understand what a college scholarship is worth at some of these schools. Aside from the great job you get from holding that piece of paper, the degree itself could cost several years of AHL salary.

If Nux get the first pick no reason why they can't trade it for pieces that whoever has picks two and three would want and get both Finns. Replace Sedins with two Finns same way Burke got twins in the first place. By working it to get both picks back to back.
- kaptaan

What about trading 1st overall to the yotes for strome and their 1st probably 10. Then we still get a number 1 center and a Dman.

They wouldn't make that trade...perhaps Strome and a 2nd

Thinking we should sign Stecher. Adding Caggiula & Demko would take some heat off the team pre-draft.

I suspect that's the plan. I have no problem moving Mccaan if management isn't sold on him. He is a nice trade piece and we desperately need D

Imagine if they added Demko, Boeser, Stetcher, Caggiula and Laine?

That's fair, but there's no guarantee he makes the team out of camp. Anything can happen from there. A freak injury could end his career.

Granted, a UND degree is costs far less to obtain......I was just going with BC as an example. Other schools like Yale or Harvard cost much more.

a friend of mine was an young NHL goalie who had attended boston and vancouver camps. Injured his back severely at 2 camps. The injury was deemed the fault of the team and ended his playing career.
He was paid out and had a permanent job as canucks practice goalie for a long long time.

So yes you are correct....sh*t like that can happen

My friend and his brother (they're both my friends) both went to Yale on a 50% scholarship. Both ended up being captain of the hockey team, and both won most eligible bachelor contest.

The older brother helped his parents pay for the younger brother's tuition once he had graduated, as the costs were astronomical. The younger brother ended up playing in the NHL briefly, then in Russia. He earned roughly $1Million a year playing hockey.

The older brother was a little smaller and never made it as a pro, but earned about 3 times the salary of his younger sibling. That right there is a shining example of why some of these kids decide to finish school.

(frank) school. If you have a chance to pursue your dream and make millions while doing it... Should be an easy choice

I guess, but both wanted something to fall back on. The streets are filled with guys "that could have, should have made it". I don't hold any ill will towards a young man that wants some security in life. There are no guarantees they see any ice time as an NHL player, let alone making a living out of it.

They made the playoffs last year with these coaches, so that part doesn't bother me. I think we'll need to get luckier with injuries, because we are again going to lack depth of quality veterans. I fully expect next year to be on the kids' shoulders, so it'll be up to them. I wouldn't be surprised to miss again if we don't stay healthy, but I expect them to compete if there is some good growth and the vets can stay in the lineup.

If Boeser's confidence isn't over the top after a year like that? What's left to prove in ND? Let's see how JB handles Demko & Boeser moving forward.

He can finish a degree later in the unlikely event hockey doesn't pan out. Employers are pretty interested when you tell them you played in the NHL, MLB etc. a piece of paper isn't going to have a dramatic influence on his life. He has the winning lotto ticket and needs to cash in

I guess if someone guarantees his education costs. My original point is that going to many of these schools costs well above $50K USD per year, which translates into a great job. It's pretty easy for us to sit on the sidelines and say go for it, but if you put yourself in their shoes it's a much more difficult decision.

As good as Boeser looks, there are still holes in his game. The kind of holes that get you into the minors. Now that entry level contract that's supposed to pay 900K/season is only paying 70K.

I know if if was my child I would encourage them to finish their education.
