Yesterdays game was very weird. Aside from a few really good chances (especially in the 1st period) the Wings really didnt get a ton of grade A shots. A lot of stuff from the outside or just tossed on net. Their 3 goals were all a direct result of bad luck for the Flyers.

1st goal:
Helm wins the F/O and dumps it in, Ghost chases it down and as he is trying to make a play with the puck, Richards clearly (hell he almost took Ghost's jersey off in the process) hooks/holds Ghost, which causes a bad pass. Weird bounce, good job by Helm to get in place, puck goes OVER Mason down his back and into the net.

2nd goal:
This is just frustrating. Ghost does a great job gaining the zone on the PP, gets the puck in deep, Flyers possess it and try to establish time and space by moving it around the boards. Jake (had his worst game of the season IMO) makes a very lazy play. Has his head up the entire time looking to rush something, and simply doesnt get against the boards. Its dumb, its reckless, and it ended up being very costly. Basics. Cant do anything with a puck you do not have. Ghost caught in deep, G skating to the other point, boom. Shortie.

3rd goal:
I mean come on...

That third goal bounced oddly off a seam of the glass. I saw it go around the glass and then bounce out and said to myself (frank) that's going in after that odd bounce.

The Flyers laid an egg at the worst time. Now I get to go tonight to a game that is must win against a cellar dwellar and we know what that normally means.

Mase has been great in these poopshows that they have played recently. Maybe he can steal one tonight.

Was it me or was that building dead last night?

... bad turnover by Shayne Gostisbehere...
- Bill

He's learning some hard lessons during this stretch run.... still one hell of a season for him.

I think this is all good for his and the other young player's development. Meaningless games with no pressure fighting for last overall would not be helping them move forward.

Usually what happens after a couple of those scrums or players not dispersing is that the ref threatens to take an extra guy from one side. If that's not heeded, it's on the players not of the officials. Simmonds did it in plain sight (even though it was more roughing than elbowing). I didn't have a problem with him getting the extra penalty.

I do think, though, that Richards should have been calling for hooking on the sequence that led to the first DET goal. But Flyers actually benefited from the bad offside call on Gostisbehere because it would have been a breakaway the other way.

- bmeltzer

I completely agree with your assessment of everything Bill, especially the non call on the first goal. Ghost was clearly hooked, the ref was right there and didn't bat an eyelash. From there I knew it wasn't going to be their night. Like you said, they were a step behind all night and had almost no consistent forecheck!

I blame the refs. And the flyers. Was very hard to watch last night. Showed no response to getting pooped on by Pens.

I don't think that turnover was really his fault...he was attempting to play the puck behind the net to MacDonald and was hooked in the process.

I also find it ironic that Babcock started Sparks last night in the Leafs/Jackets game, which meant nothing to either team, but I guarantee he'll start Bernier tonight against the Flyers. I really don't see this as coincidence, especially knowing Babcock's history with Detroit!

This team neeeeeds the forecheck. Playing towards their 2/3rds of the ice will result in these games all the time. Hopefully they do find that extra gear...it is necessary. Nothing else matters but a win tonight. I expect them to be better at home

That third goal was pretty much how the whole game went. Just a bad night.

The ice was terrible! Skaters falling, pucks bouncing, there was really no rhythm to the game.. stop start stop start.... Terrible game to watch..

Detroit has been like that for a few years now. No $$$

Despicable performance last night. Depending on what Boston does, may need as many as 5 points in the remaining 3 games to make the playoffs.

Is it really too much to ask that our 8 mill per year guys, our "second line two-way center" and our so called number 1 defenseman that has so lived up to his contract, come out in games like last night and just impose themselves on the other team? I'm sorry gang but that's what leaders do in games like that, playoff spot not clinched, head to head with a team you may get bumped out by, these guys need to step up. Gramted they may still have lost but at least make your presence known. I know streit won't be here long but the other guys are the future. It's easy to say there's no reason for concern but this team with solid goaltending has been past the first round of the playoffs in years. It's aggravating.

Haven't seen that high pressure forechecking they had going 2 weeks ago.

If they can't beat Leafs they don't deserve to be in playoffs. They are in full tank mode.

Coming off the debacle in Pittsburgh, and having two days off there is no excuse for last nights performance. Like you said, they could have played well and lost, in that instance you tip your cap, but they weren't ready to play from jump street.

Mason was terrific, deserved better.

They are going to smoke the Leafs tonight, I'm certain of that. I also think they can beat a depleted Islanders team that likely will have nothing to play for. The Pittsburgh game is the big concern. Nothing from the first 3 games, indicates they can compete with the Penguins.

Doesn't matter, refs missed a clear hook on Ghost. That completely changed the momentum and got the Wings going. There were a couple other times in the first the refs missed penalties on the Wings and I personally thought that first penalty on Jake was bs. Just seemed the refs missed a lot against the flyers, regardless I thought we played with no urgency.

That's what really bothered me. We were embarrassed on Sunday, had arguably the most rest we've had in some time, and come out flat. Especially the 3rd period. Down 2-0 in a game that's still winnable and we were just flat, slow, and soft on defense. Unacceptable. Game should have been 6-0 if it wasn't for Mase
