ii) The Clubs which participated in the preceding playoffs (but had not been ranked first in their respective Divisions and had not won the Stanley Cup that season) in order of points earned by each of them in the regular schedule of the preceding season starting with the Club having the lowest total points and followed by the Club having the next lowest total points, and so forth.
iii) The Clubs which had been ranked first in their Divisions during the next preceding season (but had not won the Stanley Cup that season) in the order of points earned by each of them in the regular schedule of the preceding season starting with the Club having the lowest total points and followed by the Club having the next lowest total points, and so forth.

That's what I thought too but then couldn't find confirmation anywhere. Somebody explained it well about a week ago and I think it's still the same as last year.

Oh yeah? I didn't know that, that's even better. Good, they might have a hard time getting past Washington, especially if Fleury is out. If the Leafs can get a solid player with that pick that would be huge.

i think the focus is more on rule ii, not iii

That's where Hunter and the staff need to make their money. The top five pick they Leafs get should be the easy one, making the mid round pick count is key for the rebuild.

agreed. if we slip to 5, i would like to see them move down maybe 2 spots, and use the assets they gained to move up with the pitts pick

from what i understand from reading them is that unless you are 1st in your division or win the cup, they just rank you based on points earned in the regular season. i'm not sure what happens to the cup finalist, if they have the 29th pick, or if they get ranked based on their points if they weren't 1st in the division. that part is left out
