I hear what you are saying. I don't know how good Daley is nor what type of longevity his type of player has. I do know going forward we have Tanger, Maatta, Dumo, Daley & Cole, then Pouliot unless he's traded without dipping into WBS. So who do you sign? Lovejob on the cheap - I'd say yes. So there is 7 with a mixture of youth & experience. Will that get us bye if we buy some depth? Or do we have to try & resign Shultz? We know the players or will by seasons end, they know us. What is the comparables on the FA or trade route (trade route probably not an option?)?

The whole point is resigning a known commodity, or trying to get a new player that may take a season to adjust, or doesn't fit.

I think they try & sign who finishes the season the best (make the decision this year between Daley or Shultz), as both Daley & Shultz will be north of 3m, & probably won't give a discount to play in Pittsburgh. Then they will be sure to know the type of player they are signing, & know he fits the system. They will have Daley for an extra year & will lose Cole with Daley (? is that right), as both contracts end, so that leaves the decision to sign Shultz this off season, then try & extend on a friendly contract Daley next season or trade him as Shultz is the man & try & replace both Cole & Daley on the cheap, or let Shultz go & try & keep Daley. Then going forward the D is set in stone with young & old. Not sure how that all goes with the cap but no one can at the moment as it hasn't been announced.

ID hope they sig Daley for cheap. Schultz should not Cost much to sign. Lovejoy or Cole should go. If they don't play pouliot they should trade him. Easy as that.

It all comes down to $. With Tanger Maatta & Dumo, you have 3 top 3 D men or 3 guys that can play on the top pair (Dumo not poopting himself next year hopefully), then you need 2 players that can fit in the top 4 which both Daley & Shultz can do. Currently we have Both Cole & Lovejob doing that but Pouliot will hopefully fill that gap. So that leaves the bottom pair which you can fill with Lovejob & a similar player.

So that leaves only 1 off Shultz or Daley to sign unless 1 of them sign team friendly deals. If both do that fan-(frank)ing-tastic, but it's unlikely. I think if anything we have driven the price of both players up.

Schultz and Daley aren't FAs at the same time though. No need to rush a decision on Daley. They basically need to choose between Schultz, re-signing Lovejoy, or finding another right D this offseason.

If they re-sign Schultz, there's no reason to keep Pouliot around.

I personally dont see much or any drop off between Maatta and Schultz. We got Schultz for very little he isnt going to be worth anything in a trade, but Maatta could bring in a very good player. Id put Maatta on the block at the draft and see who bites.

Letang Dumo Daley Schultz Pouliot Cole Lovejoy is a very good defense corp.

That's why in my first comment I said they would in my opinion make a decision between the 2 at the end of this season. Both players do a similar job (correct me here if I'm wrong), & Shultz is younger & would probably be the preferred option due to that IF he can confirm his ability before this seasons end. Once they sign Shultz then Daley becomes a luxury & can either be traded (as we have Pouliot), or try & sign him on a team friendly contract depending on cap. We have F depth coming through now so it's time to concentrate on the D. If both Shultz & Daley want big $ then 1 will definitely go.

How much are you paying Shultz?? That's the question. If we could get him on the cheap & resign Daley then our D will be a force - a very big force with depth. I doubt they trade Maatta, especially with this group just coming together.

I dont think Schultz is going to demand a huge contract, i think he appreciates the situation he is in and the confidence Pittsburgh showed in him. I imagine he will take a 2 years prove it deal around 2.75 range.

I doubt they trade Maatta, i think Pouliot is gone at the draft though.

I honestly think pouliot is gone too. He is a good player but he is not getting the chance to shine here atm.

Yes hopefully Shultz is an appreciative type of guy that likes Pittsburgh - a lot!

Who knows what's going to happen with Pouliot. I think they've put him in cotton wool, so trading him would be trading him low as he's hasn't played a lot this season. If they wanted to trade him I would think they would show him off a lot more in the NHL. Who knows what JR has up his sleeve??

Before his trade to the Pens people were calling Schultz the worst player in the NHL. He was going into yhe offseason probably looking for a professional tryout, or at best a 1 year prove it. He can reach his potential with the Pens.

Pouliots handling has been strange, it feels to me like the coaching staff doesnt think he's working hard enough in practise to be given playing time.
