Fowler's great cap hit also ends when Eichel, Reinhart and co. are due for raises.

Don't doubt it, to me it's a matter of timeline. Risto looks OK but he still needs some work. If the plan is to sign Stamkos do you really want to wait 3ish years for a defenseman drafted this year to start rounding into form? Takes Stamkos to 30 and eats the rest of Eichels and Reainharts elcs.
