Homer catches a lot of flak for leaving Hextall with a mess. His free agency record is rightfully criticized. However, his stamp on the current line up shouldn't be ignored. Hextall deserves a lot of credit for steering the Flyers on the right course but Homer deserves some for starting the process.

Sure whatever you say. You can ignore numbers since they are winning games. If they lose a few in a row guess who is going to look bad.
He is playing fine, but really all he is doing is playing like we have seen him play and now expect him to play. He isnt doing much differently, the team is just winning - YuenglingJagr
So you give Macdonald no credit for the recent stretch of wins?
I've never been one to focus on fancy stats. I don't deny they can't provide value. There is just a heck of a lot more to hockey than shots on net.

and the numbers mean more than just a shot on a net. Where I think macdonald has helped is in his ability to move the puck up the ice and to the forwards (always been a strength) and he has looked good on the second PP.
he has strengths and weaknesses and from what I saw...last night was not his best game. he scored so everyone thinks he is amazing. It is not the case.
As I have said from the beginning...the teams success comes from balanced scoring, consistent forechecking, and owning the neutral zone. it is a complete team effort right now which is why they are able to win games without Giroux and Voracek. Earlier in the year that was impossible (i.e. coots)

He's playing OK by Andrew MacDonald standards, and that's all they really need from him at the moment. It's a noticeable drop off from where MDZ was before he got hurt, but we all know AMac is not capable of hitting/maintaining that kind of level anyway.
sometimes its just nice to see it all laid out like this
why must you poop on this man's work sir? - Crimsoninja
it is a team effort just as much as the flyers current play is. Homer gave Hextall a lot to work with...he also gave him a ton of crap to deal with. It was the right time for Hextall to take over and we are seeing the benefit of that now.
Hextalls stamp on the team is evident...but from the personnel standpoint...most of his team has yet to arrive
I think a lot of the flack comes when you attach price tags to some of the acquisitions (and to the players you don't have listed) - Scoob
Not denying Hextall hasn't had to make some shrewd moves to help the situation. I also think it's overblown that Homer left him with a mess. The only current roster player with a contract that could be seen as albatross is Macdonald. If he can consistently find his niche like he has lately, that contract isn't all that outrageous.

What I believe Scoob is saying, at least the gist of it that I agree with in regards to price, is what couldve been had he made smarter decisions. It is nice to see now that the Flyers are playing good hockey, but it is hard to say what it would be like without macdonalds/vinnys contract and the JVR trade

I agree.. What might be most important though is that Hexy brought in Hakstol, and has shed salary and maximized return on vets for prospects/picks. As much as I am enjoying this run, it's really about the next few years. The team as currently constructed is not a cup contender.. at least I don't think so.. haha hello 2010!

It's also hard to say what this team would look like without 4/6 of the team's top 6 forwards acquired in gutsy moves to get younger but still compete. People can criticize all of Homer's bad decisions but his smart ones still created a strong core to pass to Hextall.

Missing one of the most important pieces to the current team that was a hex get....hakstol - Just5
Agreed, can't remember the last time the Flyers were playing such an efficient brand of hockey. Great hire by Hexy that came straight out of left field.
